bobdylan61's Full Review: Ken Kesey - One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Ken Keseys One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is the powerful story about life in the American asylum system. The story is told through the eyes of Chief Bromden, a paranoid Native American inmate on the ward, on his path towards sanity. The Chief tells the story of R.P McMurphys influence on him and the rest of the hospital. McMurphy is a free spirited criminal who chooses life at the ward instead of doing hard work on a prison work farm. McMurphys wild behavior and defiance of the wards evil nurse teach the men that everyone has a hold on their own destiny.
The author makes the reader question what is insanity and if it even truly exists by using the protagonist, McMurphy, to challenge the 1950s and 1960s American Mental Health Systems symbols of conformity. Kesey gives insight into many of the accepted practices on the ward such as electroshock therapy, forced group therapy, and even lobotomies and questions the therapeutic effects of these practices. This book was full of great message and my favorite was that you cant treat someone like theyre just a disease, were all human. We all have control over our own lives.
Keseys unique writing style makes for an entertaining read. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an entertaining book with a great ending and an inspirational message. Im glad I read this book.
I would like to note that this book was also turned into a movie in the 1970s. Ive had a chance to see it and its a little different from the book, but still a very good movie. I would recommend trying to get a hold on the book and the movie.
