camera2's Full Review: Billy Collins - Picnic, Lightning
I consider this the best of all of Billy Collins works. Each poem is a frozen moment of life, full of meaning, and raw beauty. When reading Billy you get sense of the immediate. As though, its right now, and your there. Almost nothing is not easyily understood throughout the verse. But deeper in this simplicity is something that words can not describe, but moments we all universally understand. You can go for the Eastern Philosophy of the buddha mind, or just that moment when you realize there is more to life than what is registering on your concouisness.
Each book Billy has written starts with a poem to the reader. Somehow trying to illicit an inner ear type of listening to the poems that follow. Not the chattering day to day thoughts we tell our selfs, but that inner self which exisits when the movie in our heads is turned off.
Call these poems of enlightenment, or just poems of reality. If you enjoy Robert Frost, you will hopefully enjoy this book. (His newest 9 Horses is also highly recommended.)
