| bethy's Full Review: Andre Malraux and Gillian McCain - Man's Hope |
It's rare that I find a non-fiction work that I absolutely cannot put down. This was one of them, however. I had been interested in punk rock for awhile already, but I hadn't known much about the American scene until reading this compilation of interviews by American punk legends. It's not only the musicians who talk here, but anyone involved in the scene. It shouldn't matter whether you listen to or like the Ramones or the Stooges or Patti Smith. If you have any interest at all in mid- to late-'70s American culture, or any interest in underground culture, Please Kill Me will be a worthwhile read. I've leant this book to a few friends, and they've all had similarly positive responses - even those who knew next to nothing about punk.
What makes the book so juicy is the way the interviews have been edited together to create a simulated conversation among the era's punkers. A comment from Iggy Pop will contradict a directly preceding one from Johnny Thunders, insights from Richard Hell will back up a story by Joey Ramone, and so on. It all makes for an engaging, fun reading (and learning) experience.
