Alright, so I admit it, I have an obsession. For the last several years, I have had a very unhealthy sick love for Rachel Ray. I realize that she isn't the perfect woman in magazines, she isn't the the skinniest girl around, but she is breathtaking in her own right. There is something about her that truly does it for me and I honestly can't explain it. And this of course, is how I came across her book, Big Orange Book.
BIG ORANGE BOOK I purchased this book a couple of months ago at Borders when I was looking for some new recipes. I love to cook and typically find myself simply creating whatever sounds like it would be tasty in my head. However, it often helps to have a bit of inspiration, so I buy a lot of cookbooks and use those recipes to create something of my own. I rarely ever take a recipe directly and usually modify it to make it special. However, the Big Orange Book was a little bit different. Afterall, Rachel Ray was the creator of the book, so I found myself a little bit more trusting of the recipes. And if nothing else, a lot more motivated to look through the book.
My first thoughts on the book was that it was like any other recipe book. It was broken down into 9 sections, 30 minute meals, entree burgers, vegetarian meals, kosher meals, meals for one, alittle more than 30 minutes but worth it, from my family to yours, starters and snacks, and hoiday menus. Each of the section obviously features a couple of recipes with high quality pictures and the other recipes simply have the directions. What I found was that just because it doesn't have a picture, doesn't mean it isn't incredibly tasty. What I found was that the ones with pictures are simply the ones that look the most appealing completed.
QUALITY OF FOOD While I haven't tried all of the recipes in the book and who has with any recipe book, I have tried a pretty substantial number of them. What I found was that all of the recipes were incredibly delicious and made to fit a wide variety of tastes. Even the vegetarian meals are good enough that they can be fed to those that are typically meat and potato people. So the food has excellent versatility and appeal.
Some of the recipes that I truly enjoy are the philly cheese steak sloppy joes and south philly salad. This recipe is absolutely wonderful. It is sort of like having the goodness of a philly on a burger bun. But what I found is that it was a lot more flavorful when made in this way. But it does have a bit of a different flavor to it but it simply explodes in your mouth. Another great recipe is the Blue-Rugula Burgers with Radicchio Pasta Salad. While I didn't like the pasta salad as much, the blue rugulua burgers were incredible. It uses a blue cheese and arugula leaves as the major flavors and it simply make sthe burger explode with flavor. I personally like mine the best with ranch dressing and a bit of horseradish, but even without it, I enjoy it. The beet Risotto is a very fine, but light recipe. While you can't eat a lot of it at once, it is very tasty and very popular especially if you don't tell everyone what it is. Just let them taste it and enjoy it.
Overall, the book really has a lot of great recipes, it is very well written and the directions are extremely easy to understand. The most important part is that she uses ingredients that are for the most part readily available. I had some issues with a couple of ingredients, but if you go to a major store you shouldn't have any issues, just make sure that you grab the questionable ingredients first otherwise you'll find yourself walking around the store putting all the other stuff back when you realize they don't sell it there.
There is a wide variety of foods in the book so it is great for someone that is just starting off on their own and wants to cook quality meals. There are excellent meals that will put even the finest restaurants to shame. Definitely a must have for any kitchen.
