talyseon's Full Review: Kazuto Tatsukawa - Return To Scandalous Seiryo Uni...
Return to Scandalous Seiryo University by Tatsukawa Kazuto.
Warning: This is a Yaoi review. Yaoi is a form of Japanese graphic novels, a manga featuring gay romance. Usually written by women, for women, this stories range from sweet romances to extremely steamy sexual adventures between men. If this is not your cup of tea, well, you have been warned.
This volume takes us back to Seiryo University as the summer vacation is ending. The first crisis for our intrepid lovers, Yuichi and Tsuyoshi is this; Tsuyoshi has forgotten to do the summer assignments. But having a boyfriend who is the student body president has its advantages, and Tsuyoshi is given an extension.
As we saw in the first volume Yuichi is definitely the aggressor. In yaoi terms, he is the Seme, and Tsuyoshi, the receptive partner is the Uke. And the theme this year seems to be coitus interuptus.
Not only does Yuichi initiate sex at inappropriate times, and in inappropriate places, he doesn’t seem to mind getting caught; he doesn’t feel embarrassed or shy. He says he doesn’t care who knows he loves Tsuyoshi.
But this is a problem for Tsuyoshi. He realizes that he has never said “I love you,” to Yuichi. He realizes that from the get go, Yuichi has called all the shots, and he just responds. But every time he gets ready to say the words, something happens, usually something embarrassing. (Hence the coitus interuptus.)
But as school begins, Yuichi is faced with greater problems, and broader social horizons. In Yuichi’s orbit he is rubbing elbows with the rest of the Student council, Ayanokoji Ren (female, senior), the vice president, Izumi Yuhei (male, sophomore), the secretary, Yano Ryosuke (male, junior) accountant, Ishida Kaori, (male, junior) ethics representative, Nishi Tatsuya, (male, senior) athletic representative, and Sakai Nozomi, (female, senior) arts representative. ((Note, I follow the Japanese tradition of putting the family names first, and personal names second.))
But there is a problem; some one has stolen the test papers from the Student Council rooms. And since the tests presence there was a secret, it looks like the thief has to be some one on the council, or someone who is very close to someone on the council, some one like Misonoi Tsuyoshi! At least that is the theory that Ishida Kaori, the student council ethics representative puts forward. However, since it is no secret that Kaori is hypercompetitive and hates coming in second, (to Yuichi) no one takes that too seriously. Then again they do not discount it.
But Yuichi is the president because he is the smartest kid in school, and he tells Tsuyoshi not to worry; he thinks he knows who did it, and how to cope. He just tutors his lover so he will pass.
Ishida Kaori is surprised when he receives an envelope in the mail, from Hajitsume Yuichi; it contains a copy of the test! Kaori is in a pickle. If he gets a perfect grade, he will be revealed as the thief. So he hits on a plan. He deliberately misses two questions.
When the grades are posted, Kaori finds himself….dead last in the class. Every other student made a perfect grade.
Yuichi sent the same letter to every student. He knew only the guilty one would try to disguise that he had the test. Only the student council knew the tests had been stolen. So Kaori is revealed as the thief, and is dead last. And Yuichi lets that stand as his punishment.
Of course, everyone has to retake the test; they may have caught the thief, but the test was tainted, so…
Tsuyoshi really realizes how much effort Yuichi is willing to put out to keep his word. And he loves him even more. So why can’t he say that he loves him. He does. He just can’t say the words.
Well, something is coming into the boys’ life, something that will help focus Tsuyoshi. Uruma Yuichiro, Student body president of the very prestigious St Casiel University. Heir to the most powerful conglomerate in Japan, and self proclaimed first love of Hajitsume Yuichi!
How can Tsuyoshi compete with someone like that? Will he just bow out, or will he fight and risk humiliation?
This edition has a lot more social interactions than the last. Also, this book only deals with Yuichi and Tsuyoshi. The first story was only half of the first book, with other romances in the second half. This one is pure Seiryo. There are fewer sex scenes, but they tend to be longer, so it works out to about the same smut to story ratio. I will warn you here and now, these scenes leave nothing to the imagination. And they are very well drawn, with lots of loving detail. These comics are not for kids, folks.
All the art is very good. Ms. Tatsukawa is gifted, tending more towards the realistic side of the manga scale. If chibi is a one and a photorealistic drawing is a 10, this is a 6, 6.5. She is also fond of backgrounds, something that is not universal. I like her stuff.
The Return is a worthy successor to Scandalous Seiryo University. It has all the sweetness and sweaty hotness of the first, and develops both boys, and their world. I am liking this series more and more.
So, if you want a definite change of pace, check out the adventures Yuichi and Tsuyoshi, and their friends at Scandalous Seiryo University.
