msmorvay's Full Review: Lisa Adams - S'mores: Gourmet Treats for Every Occ...
I am a big fan of cookbooks. I am also a big fan of S'mores so when I saw the cookbook S'mores Gourmet Treats for Every Occasion, by Lisa Adams I could not resist.
S'mores Gourmet Treats for Every Occasion
S'mores Gourmet Treats for Every Occasion dares to take us away from the Hershey bar, marshmallow, and grand cracker s'mores that most of us adore.
The book even goes beyond the grand cracker as the main sandwich compound using other things such as cookies. Basically it appears that the only component according to this book is that there must be a marshmallow inside and it must be melted and sticky. This can be done by using a camp fire, baking it, heating it on the stove top or melting it in the microwave.
The book has an entire chapter devoted to the definition of a s'more, its common element, and how to make s'mores, including how to stack them and heat them. It also tells you how set up a s'more buffet.
There are also tips on melting marshmallows and roasting marshmallow facts. Did you know that a marshmallow cooked on a wire hanger or metal cooking rod cooks much faster than a marshmallow on a stick? However, as someone pointed out in the comments it is not the safest way to do it as the metal gets very hot while a stick does not.
The book has approximately 121 pages after the introduction. Some of those pages are dedicated to full page photos of s'mores. All in all there are approximately 70 different s'more recipes in this book
The book is broken out in to chapters. The chapters are as follows:
Sweet Starts Classic Tastes Extreme Variations The Exotics Holiday Favorites
Most of the recipes use only 3 ingredients including the marshmallow, but there are others that require a couple of other food items.
An examples of the s'mores in this book are the Sugar Cookie Crunch which is a s'more made between two sugar cookies, with a marshmallow and a Nestle White Crunch bar inside.
My favorite S'more in this book is the Banana Caramel S'more. This one is made with graham crackers, Hershey caramel kisses, a marshmallow, and a banana. It is very messy but really, really good.
There are even s'more recipes that include berry type fruits as well.
As I mentioned above there are several full page photos of the s'mores in the book. The photos are very nicely done and really show off the different s'mores. There is not a picture of every recipe in the book but there are several pictures. About every third page has a picture if not every other page.
There is no nutrition information provided, but come on, did you really think there would be?
My Thoughts
Personally I think this book is genius. What a great idea to expand on the good old s'more. It makes me think "Why didn't I think of this?"
It is a beautifully done book. A hardcover book with easy, and neat recipes, it has great simple instructions and is full of beautiful full page color photos that are very enticing.
I can't wait to bring out some un-usual ingredients at are next get together, perhaps I will create a S'more bar and show everyone how to make some more creative s'mores I think a lot of people will be thrilled to expand their s'more knowledge.
Do I think the book was worth the $16.99 price tag? Probably not, but I am not sorry I bought it. It does have a generous amount of s'more recipes. I have made a few of them now and I have loved each one that I have made and I have liked them so much I could not wait to share them with other people.
If you are a big dessert person or someone who entertains a lot and is looking for creative dessert ideas this is a wonderful little book to have. I have been thrilled with the book so far and I am sure I will be making many more different s'mores from this book in the future, and might even be creating some S'more recipes of my own.
