The Bottom Line: Michael Shoulders has crafted a story of lasting beauty with Say Daddy! Which word will baby say first?
Michael Shoulders is an educator extraordinaire. He has been in the classroom, served as an administrator and worked with disadvantaged youth as a Title 1 director. For over 30 years, Shoulders has taught the magic of reading. And in Tennessee, we think of Michael as a treasure. In the last few years, he has also become a top children's author with works like V is for Volunteer, The ABC Book of American Homes, Count on Us, and 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi. And lastly, he is a dear colleague.
In his most recent effort, Michael Shoulders explains the importance of reading to children in his well crafted book Say Daddy! In this charming bear family a new child is born. From the beginning they take turns reading to the young cub. Each time they finish, they also try to get the child to say their name first. So first mother reads to baby on the day the child was born, then daddy, then brother, and Aunt Grace and Uncle Roy, too. And finally grandma reads to baby. In return for all the reading, baby does what babies do. At the family reunion, while opening grandma's present, baby surprises them all with the first word from her sweet, tender lips. Ah, so was it mama, or daddy, or Aunt Grace or Uncle Roy or grandma?
You'll just have to get this delightful work and see! (You really didn't think I was going to give it away, did you?) Michael has crafted a fine literary masterpiece with Say Daddy! The book's universal appeal will endear it to millions worldwide. Its classic moral truths woven into the fabric of each book read to the baby will provide conversation in each classroom in which it is used. Thoughts of family, using the imagination, sharing, kindness and love are all attributes of life presenting powerful, enabling lessons for youth. The magic has been spun in this well crafted book.
Likewise, Teri Weidner has presented beautiful watercolor illustrations matching and enhancing the text. The artwork is incredible and makes the visual venture as memorable as the auditory. The 30-page book tells a beautiful, meaningful story that children and teachers will love for generations. Published by Sleeping Bear Press the hard back costs about $16.00. What a great gift for a newborn, a parent-to-be, or a teacher!
