Scandalous Seiryo University Class Reunion by Tatsukawa Kazuto
Warning: This is a Yaoi review. Yaoi is a Japanese Graphic Art form depicting romances between men, written largely by and for women. They range from very sweet schoolboy romances to hot and steamy. Despite the earlier history of this series (steamy) this one is very tame. But if this is not your cup of tea, well, you have been warned.
Eight years have passed since Misonoi and Hajizume ruled Seiryo University. Now Misonoi's little brother Kouki is all grown up and attending that alma mater. There, he is on the Kendo team. The Kendo coach, Hawakaya is also the boy's guardian, taking over his Sensei's responsibilities when he vanished years ago, running the dojo, and raising his sons.
Now Kouki is at that awkward stage where he expects to be treated as a full adult, and yet be cut the same slack he was as a kid. (Such an utterly charming age....). Hawakaya is always riding him, to do better, be more responsible, and always ends each harangue with, "You may have grown taller, but your mind has yet to catch up."
But when Kouki, hiding out to eat his skipped breakfast (late, as usual) sees Hawakaya and Professor Masafumi kissing on the school grounds, he freaks. And when he confronts Hawakaya, he loses his composure and screams "Don't ever touch me!"
This of course leads to Hawakaya's complete melt down, his leaving home, and Kouki's manic panic as he realizes what he has lost. As usual, it is up to Hajizune to put things back on track.
With a little help from his former girlfriend, Kazuma, he realizes the nature of his feelings for Hawakaya, and how what he felt was not disgust, but betrayal. It is an angst ridden rollercoaster ride of frantic searches and near misses, and the perfect add for stopping to think just a moment, and avoid a lot of trouble.
You know that eventually they will be reconciled, and all will be right with the world. You just have to watch the drama to get there.
As always, Ms. Tatsukawa's art is superlative, her style on the realistic end of manga, her boys all long limbed and pretty, but only the girls have the huge eyes. She does occasionally descend into "Chibi" the cutesy doll rendering; stubby limbs, big eyes, huge yelling mouths, etc. Fortunately, not too often.
And her composition and background work make up for these minor transgressions.
However, there is one major lack that can't be easily addressed; there are no sex scenes in this manga. There is a hot guy in a kimono, and no one rips it off him. I am, needless to say, a bit let down.
Still, the story is well written, tender, if just a long melodramatic angst fest. Still, there is hope; the series continues and our yaoika has promised us lots of sex next installment. This is very Lean-N-Mean, weighing in at 500 concise words.
