Raw and real, Kiedis comes at us strong

Pros:Brutal honesty coupled with redemption and sprinkled with gut busting humor.
Cons:Super raunchy moments
Difficult, real description of addiction (may be neg. for some)
The Bottom Line: Anthony Kiedis reels you in and doesn't let you go 'til the end. Every moment you will want to know what's next.

Before reality TV was a subculture, Anthony Kiedis gave his fans more than a glimpse into the absolute whirlwind of crazy that has been his life. Holding nothing back- and I truly, absolutely mean nothing- he reveals how he has obtained the fame of one of modern rock's greatest icons.

Like most of us, Kiedis started with humble beginnings in a broken home. Never really finding his niche in Grand Rapids, MI, he split the second he had a chance to live with his dad, Blackie Dammett, in LA. Falling into a life of partying in drugs, his days of normalcy faded quickly and he joined the fleet of men sooner than most could ever hope or dream.

Kiedis describes his struggle with addiction and how it played a major role in his life. A secondary supporting role was most definitely earned by his array of muses, who, though high in the numbers, never were portrayed as the expected "groupies." Don't worry, the details aren't spared in the slightest. It's all there, right down to the... well I'll leave something to the imagination and let you do the discovering as you read.

If you ever wondered how the Red Hot Chili Peppers got their start, this is your go-to book. I personally had a few good laughs as Kiedis reminisced on some of his and Flea's adventures. There was a surprising amount of somberness associated with elements of and certain seasons with the band and it was bittersweet to be given that knowledge. Nonetheless, I feel like a more connected fan for it.

Although many details of Kiedis' life were extremely hard to experience through reading, I found myself at a complete loss of ability to put it down. It was virtually impossible. I have read this book three times now and each time, I read it in two sittings or less. There's something completely riveting about his descriptions and humor, and of course it never hurts to have front row seats to the intimate details of a funk-rock star's life.
