kamel622's Full Review: Laura Joffe Numeroff - Si le Das un Panqueque a un...
We've been having fun reading Laura Numeroff books in my family daycare. One of the things I like about her books is that they work well with the 3 year old and also the 8 year olds that I care for.
Recently we read If You Give A Pig A Pancake another in her series of books about cause and effect and landing right back where you started.
The Story
In this book we see a young girl offer a pancake to a pig, but of course in so doing the pig needs syrup and then needs to wash up because he is sticky.
"If you give a pig a pancake, she'll want some syrup to go with it. You'll give her some of your favorite maple syrup. She'll probably get all sticky, so she'll want to take a bath."
Each thing he needs leads to something else he wants or needs like taking a bath, playing with a bath toy, feeling homesick and going on a trip....all of these things lead the pig back to wanting a pancake.
The Illustrations
The quirky and fun illustrations in this book look to be pencil and watercolor drawings. They are outlined in black and filled in with color with most pages having a white background and the illustration placed in different places on the pages. There is no colored border, but a few pages have edge to edge drawings.
The text is a bit small but is ideal for sitting on the couch or snuggling in bed and reading. I have a bit more difficulty holding it up and reading it to my little group, but it is doable.
Our Feelings
As in the other If You Give.....books in this series If You Give A Pig A Pancake takes the reader / listener from points A to Z and back again.
My daycare children laughed at the way the pig balanced on furniture, though we talked about why this is dangerous to do, and they loved how the pig seemed to create chaos everywhere she went. Throwing clothes out from under the bed or pulling them from the dresser drawers she seemed to make mess after mess, which of course delights children to see.
I'm not sure the children understand or see the similarities to what parents go through as their little charges ask for this and that, but this book certainly reminds the adult reading it!
I really love the illustrations in this book. From the cover of the book where we see the pig daintily sitting on a windowsill with a plate of hot pancakes to the last page where we see the girl worn out and the pig sitting on the table with the syrup, each page is filled with just enough detail to have us perusing each and every page before we turn to the next one.
This is a fun book that I very highly recommend for children from 3 - 8 years old. You'll giggle and laugh out loud and feel attached to the cute little demanding piggie too!
