talyseon's Full Review: John Ostrander - Star Wars Legacy: Claws of the Dr...
Star Wars Legacy Volume Three: Claws of the Dragon. Written by John Orstrander Pencils by Jan Duursema.
Seven years ago, Darth Krayt sent his legion of Sith followers to destroy the Jedi Academy on Ossus. In the battle that followed, Jedi Kol Skywalker sacrificed himself to ensure the escape of his son, Padawan Cade Skywalker.
Overcome with anger, fear, and regret, Cade turned away from his training, joining the Pirate Rav before becoming a bounty hunter. As captain of the Mynock, Cade, along with crewmates Jariah Syn and Deliah Blue, turned in anyone for a reward, even the Jedi Hosk Trey’lis.
That was, until a confrontation with the Sith who killed his father convinced Cade to face his legacy. No longer running from the past, Cade has undertaken a solo mission to Coruscant, capital of the Galactic Empire, where he intends to rescue Hosk from the depths of the Sith Temple…..
In the last volume, this story had fragmented into shards…now the story has regained it’s cohesive flow. Cade needs to atone for his misdeeds, and the worst of these was turning in the Bothan Jedi Healer, Master Hosk, to the Sith for a bounty. Now he is going in to free Hosk, and unshackle his own heart. His angle; the Sith Temple was the Jedi temple, and he grew up there as a child. He knows its hidden byways.
Cade is not a fool though; he leaves the Mynock for Syn and Deliah, entrusting the codes to Queen Jool the Hutt.
There are predictable outcomes to certain courses of action, and one is if you walk into a Sith Temple alone, you will be captured. However, Cade is not killed. Darth Krayt is very interested in Cade’s ability to force the Force to heal; the power is dark, since it imposes the users will on the Force. Krayt, Dark Lord of the Sith and Emperor of the known universe decides to try and turn a Skywalker to the Dark Side. Even knowing history, some idiots are doomed to repeat it.
But Cade is not all alone. Deliah Blue will not let him be, and she won’t let Syn turn his back on him either. But more interesting are the enemies that want to help; Chak the Wookiee, captain of the Grinning Liar (the ship Blue and Syn rented in Ghosts, then lost) and his first mate Kee, a half grown Devaronian girl. They want the Liar back, and that means facing Rav the pirate; something that will go better with Cade.
Their other “dark ally” Moff Nyna Calixte, lover and cohort of Grand Moff Morlish Veed, the would have been Emperor of the galaxy, if Darth Krayt hadn’t declared the job his. We learn several things about the Moff…for instance, her daughter is leader of Skull Squadron, and hates her guts. And she has other family ties…ones that bode very interesting things of Cade.
Calixte sends in Morrigan Corde, assassin, spy, and mother of Cade Skywalker. Now Cade has a chance.
One of the most interesting things about this volume though, are the secrets about Darth Krayt. His race, planet of origin, and ancestry are revealed, as is his weakness. And this is a weakness Cade is in a unique position to exploit.
This comic is one of the best written things coming out of Dark Horse. It is back on it’s feet, telling Cade’s story. It is complex, convoluted, and surprisingly subtle for a graphic novel. The art is as good as the story, Ostrander and Duursema being one of my favorite teams. Duursema has a very realistic style, with great portraiture and excellent anatomy. The backgrounds are cluttered and detailed. Mention of Brad Anderson’s colours should also be made, since the three dimensional pop of the art is dependant on his shading work.
When a story has plot, pacing, dialogue, character development, sub plots, twists, and brilliant art to back it up, you know you have a winner. The magic of Legacy: Broken has been re-realized. Check it out.
