But I have a friend who has custody of his two teenagers living with us. I can sympathize with so many step-moms out there cause its like I am in that role taking care of them because she basically abandoned them. Pays $46 (you read that right) in child support, so I've been helping to clothe, feed them, drive them around, take them places, etc. Meanwhile, the "Mom" is walking around with a Blackberry and a $400 a month car payment, none of which I can afford because I am taking care of her kids. And I can see her daughter growing to be just like her eventually because even seeing me with my kids, she doesn't seem to get that what her mother's done is not an acceptable way for a parent to be.
Good review of a book about a complicated issue. I know there are some divorced parents who won't like reading it either.

Thanks Sara...
You'd have to know my husband's ex wife to understand. I think a lot of the "bad influence" label comes from the fact that I'm a female/potential mother figure who doesn't practice the same religion she does, as well as the fact that the girls seemed to like me the one time they visited. I kind of think Bill's ex is an extreme example of what some stepmoms have to deal with. Most bio moms are much more reasonable than Bill's former wife is.
On the other hand, while I know she didn't intend it to turn out this way, I think she probably did me and our marriage a favor, even though I know she really hurt Bill and his daughters by keeping them apart.

Maybe I lack imagination, but I have a hard time thinking of you as a "bad influence..." What a complicated situation stepmothering must be.
