artemis8's Full Review: Emily Jenkins - Sugar Would Not Eat It
Sugar Would Not Eat It is an adorable book about a boy who finds a kitten and tries to care for it. Leo discovers a kitten on the steps to his apartment and decides to keep it and name it Sugar.
Leo thinks it would be nice to offer Sugar his last piece of birthday cake. It's very yummy looking, chocolate with iced blue frosting roses on it. But Sugar (as one might guess from the title) would not eat it.
Leo asks several of his neighbors for thoughts about how to get Sugar to eat it. With their suggestions he talks about how he slaved to make that cake, and how children and kitten are starving in other parts of the world and then even bargains with her that she just needs to eat four bites. But Sugar refuses. She just stares sadly and hungrily.
Finally when Leo is frustrated and upset himself he does something that gets Sugar to be a lot happier. The silly thing is once Leo resolves the food issue he attempts to do another thing that anyone who knows cats will know Sugar isn't going to like. It made my son laugh and call Leo silly.
My son is 5 and has asked to read this book multiple times. He likes the how one of his neighbors is named Binkie, he thought that was so funny. He loves to say 'Sugar would not eat it!" when that line would come up.
There are just a few things I didn't like about this book. He seems to have no parents. I never saw someone that could have been a dad. A female did present the cake and peak on him a few times when he was talking with the neighbors, but no parent ever approved bringing the cat inside or gave advice on how to feed her. Also there was a part where Leo was mean to Sugar, he yelled at her to eat the cake.
However, those factors aside, Emily Jenkins writes and Giselle Potter illustrates a great book for kids ages 4-8. The illustrations are done in pencil, ink, gouache, gesso, and watercolor and Sugar is a cute gray little thing. Leo turned 11 (per the candles on his birthday cake) and he looks to a variety of adults and peers for suggestions. I like the idea of asking for help even if the suggestions don't really work. My son highly recommends this one. He was very disappointed that we had to return it to the library.
