Book Review: T is for Trespass
Written: Feb 16 '08 (Updated Mar 11 '08)
Pros:Darker more thrilling than others in the series.
Cons:None T is for Trespass is really good.
The Bottom Line: This book is a little darker, and scarier than the rest in the series, but is pretty good.
There are several authors that I like but only a couple of authors whose books I buy shortly after they are released. I buy most of my books used, but I am always too anxious to get a hold of book written by Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton. So when Sue Graftons latest book to her alphabet mystery series T is for Trespass came out, I had to go out and get it right away.
T is for Trespass The Plot
This story is about two women one is Kinsey Millhone the female private eye who is the subject of all of Sue Graftons number series books. The other is a woman who goes by the name of Solana Rojas.
Solano Rojas is a woman who has stolen the identity of someone else. She has health care experience, but not the educational credentials that she wants to get the type of jobs that she wants. So in order to short cut the whole educational experience she steels the identity of others to get the jobs that she wants. The jobs that she wants put her in the position of caring for older people. These older people who have no family to watch over them, and who are too weak to help themselves are perfect clients for her. These people are people she can take advantage of.
Kinseys crotchety old neighbor Gus has fallen and has hurt himself badly. So Kinsey and another neighbor follow the bellows and whimpers to Guss house. Gus has hurt his shoulder in the fall among other things. After he has is treated at the hospital the doctors say he will not be able to go home with out someone to help care for him. Guss only relative a niece lives on the other side of the country; so someone will need to be hired to do the caring. The niece comes for a short visit to see what she can do and Kinsey is the one who contacted her, so she asks Kinsey if she can check in to the caregiver who she has hired to take care of her uncle. Kinsey does the checking and it seems Solano Rojas has excellent references and does indeed seem qualified to take care of Gus.
As Kinsey works an insurance fraud case she cant help but wonder what is going on at her neighbors house.
Kinseys investigator sense is telling her something is wrong. She barely sees Gus anymore and when she does he is terribly thin, and Solana seems to have taken over his home as well. A series of events leads Kinsey to be afraid for Guss life, but she is struggling to prove that there is a problem and her curiosity just might put her life in jeopardy as well.
My Thoughts
I have always loved the number series mysteries. This book kind of turned a corner in the whole series in my opinion. This book did not seem to be so much of a mystery, as you pretty much know who the villain is and pretty much what she is up to from the beginning. This book was more of a thriller than a mystery.
There is kind of a sub plot going on as Kinsey is trying to work a case at the same time she is trying to piece together what is happening next door. The case turns out to be solved way to easily in my opinion, but the case is kind of like back ground clutter to the Solana Rojas story line.
The book goes into a series of spirals and the situation slowly unfolds. The book has a wonderful build up to a scary climax. So even though you know who the villain is dont think that there are no twists or scary surprises. This book takes Kinseys life to a whole new scarier level.
This book is not as light hearted as some of the other books in the series, it has a whole element of darkness added to it that I have not seen in the other books.
Frankly I like both formats. I like the lighter slightly wittier story lines, but I also liked this scary thriller type book as well.
T is for Trespass is not your same old Kinsey Millhone mystery, but it is still really good.
If you like a good thriller read T is for Trespass, by Sue Grafton.
