Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks by Margaret Sutherland
Written: Mar 24 '13
Pros:nice illustrations, good examples of things to be thankful for
Cons:nothing in particular
The Bottom Line: I good choice to read at Thanksgiving for a younger crowd, nice selection of things to be thankful and good illustrations.
One of the books I know I've read to my son on a few Thanksgivings in the past, including this last one was Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks. This book shows several different families enjoying the holiday and describing what they are thankful for.
One boy is thankful for his mom and dad. Another girl is thankful for the other people in her family like her grandparents. Children are thankful for their friends, their teachers, their bedroom, hot chocolate and more. The last thing is a child who is thankful for special days like Thanksgiving where family can be together.
The text is by Margaret Sutherland and it is simple with just a couple sentences on each page, but it's not boring. When one child likes lollipops they say the reason is because they turn your tongue colors. Kids will be able to relate with the different things that are mentioned to be grateful for. I thought the writing was thoughtful and touching, a great book to read for Thanksgiving.
The artwork is by Sonja Lamut. The colors are a little muted. The scenes aren't all fall related, but several are. The families include an Asian family with one boy, a Caucasian family with a girl and a boy, an African American family with a boy and a girl, and a mixed family with Caucasian and either Asian or Hispanic members. Often the scenes have pets in them too. They are all happy and very appropriate for the theme and the text.
Overall this was a very nice book and great for kids 3-8 years old I'd say. I'd definitely recommend it for a Thanksgiving holiday read.
