gaelkm's Full Review: Fiona Watt - That's Not My Reindeer
My parent's neighbors have a young daughter, who just turned 4 on her birthday a couple of weeks ago. She's an only child and, it's no surprise, has just about everything. My Mom did want to get her something for her birthday that was a bit different, something that she didn't already have. we decided to go out to look at Barnes and Noble Bookstore for some unusual books. They had a great selection too.
We were lucky to find one that we both thought was really cute. This book is called "That's Not My Reindeer" by Fiona Watt and Rachel Wells. It's a cardboard book and is 6 pages long. It measures about 6 x 6 inches, so it's not too big and not too small, in fact, it's just right. :)
This book is one of the type of educational books because it is a textured books. Textured books feature pages with fabric, for example, which help introduce young children to sensory stimulation and language awareness.
Each page has one detailed drawing of a colorful reindeer, who is smiling as he stands in the snow. The reindeer drawing is large enough that it covers both pages. There is also a small friend nearby, such as a squirrel or little snowman. The background of each page is a bright color. One is red, one is purple, one is blue and so on. The background also has silver stars or shiny snowflakes, which is an attractive addition to the fun drawings. It's definitely a festive-looking book.
For example, each page says "That's Not My Reindeer..." and then it will say, "...it's body is too furry." Another page has a reindeer with velvety ears and these are textured with fur. Another page has a reindeer with a furry textured tail. The final page is a reindeer with a large soft red nose.(Of course, he is supposed to be none other than Rudolph!)
It's very simple in terms of a "story" as this is all there is to it. This book would also make a great Christmas gift, but it doesn't necessarily have to be for Christmas only. It could be appropriate as a winter story book too.
This is a sweet little book that is well made and will give hours of reading pleasure to a young child. It will also help them learn about textures and language at the same time. How can you lose with that?

My Mom bought this for $9.99 at Barnes and Noble. By the way, I heard that the little neighbor girl loves her new book.(I think you may be able to get it for less elsewhere.)
