Oh, teaching little ones can be a tough road. They question everything and learn everything from us, the parent or parents. No matter what you do, telling the truth has got to be the biggest lesson that you can teach someone watching everything you do. If not, you can possibly get caught in a lie (no matter how little) and it can come back and bite you in the tush quickly and painfully!
There are times where a convenient little white lie is used to get out of a situation in which you dont really want to be involved. But, those little eyes and ears are seeing you do this and will either use it on you some day, or they will spill the beans, hurting others around you more than you could ever know. Its best to be upfront at all times. This book helps reinforce that feeling as well. Whats worse: Getting in trouble for breaking something? Or, getting caught lying about it and the person you lied to not trusting you anymore? I would have to say that later, but you and your little ones can decide. This book can help!
The Story
There are some days where you are just destined to get in some sort of trouble. Those would be idle days where you can think of nothing you really want to do and you just sort of have a wild desire to something, but you just cannot think of anything fun that is drawing your attention. Therefore, you know that something will have to happen to keep you entertained and keep you amused.
The cubs found this to be the case. Brother did not want to pick wild blackberries and he did not want to twist sister in the swing outside to see who could get dizzier. Nothing sounded like fun (besides, they just played with the swing yesterday).
Well, that is when sister challenged brother by telling him that the only thing he loves to do is play soccer, he considered that a reason to tell his sister that he is better than her in dribbling the soccer ball and he could get it past her without any trouble at all. Sister was pretty good at soccer too and that was a challenge she could not refuse. Problem was, they were still inside their home and mama bear was doing some chores and papa was working in the garage. (You parents can see this one coming, right?)
Well, one thing leads to another, brother faced off with sister, ball between them and he moved it with his foot and before thinking about it, he kicked the ball sharply. Sister, being as quick as she was, caught the block with her knee and badda boom, badda bing, the soccer ball was a wild thing darting, bouncing and going all around the room.
It knocked down mamas favorite lamp, her most favorite lamp. There are rules in every home. This home is no exception. No eating in bed, no tracking mud on clean floors and absolutely NO BALL playing in the house! Well, the cubs know this and instantly realized they were in huge trouble when mama came back from doing her chores.
Oh, the story these two cubs concocted. They barely had time to push the ball behind a chair in the living room when mama walked into the room. She asked what happened and the cubs started telling the wildest story that one could ever imagine. Some crazy looking wild bird knocked over her lamp.
Papa bear came in the house shortly after mama heard the wild bird story. When they were trying to explain what happened to papa, they could not recall the details of their crazy story. Therefore, it was hard to keep everything straight when retelling their story about how the lamp was broken.
Mama was telling the cubs about how sad she was that the lamp was broken and that the lamp can either be fixed or a new lamp purchased. But, she told the cubs that these little cubs she has always trusted to tell her the truth, these two cubs shes always trusted, might not be telling her the truth and that trust is not something that can be put back together.
Suddenly, the cubs started shouting out the truth about what happened when the telephone rang. Mama was happy with that, as the cubs came clean and quite fibbing about the bird breaking the lamp. That was an important lesson for the cubs to learn, now they could move on, fix the lamp and remember how important it is to tell the truth.
Overall Impressions
This book helps teach a valuable lesson about telling the truth and keeping someones trust. If you tell a lie it will likely hurt you and your loved ones in the end, especially if you get caught. My daughter has come forward to me a number of times and says that I am telling you the truth and she will tell hem and haw around a story because shes nervous telling me something that will make me sad. But, as I always tell her, I might not be happy with the actions, but I will always be happy if I am told the truth and that if she does lie and I find out it is a lie, she will pay stiffer penalties for the deed than she would if she had told me the truth in the first place.
She seems to have taken this message in the book and my message to heart as she has made sure she has told me the truth. I have had to give her penalties for the actions even though she tells me the truth and she understands why it has to be that way. I hope this lesson will continue on into her teenage years and beyond. I always want to be the person she can come to, to tell me anything and not be judged. But, she realizes that when bad things happen there are consequences and there will be things that have to be done to remedy the problem. As a parent, I hope that I can instill in my child the things I have learned over the years and help her lead by example!
