This was a hard book to put down the moment you start to read it. The author uses true events from the year 1888 with a scatter of imagination to bring the reader into the world of the struggling pioneers. His work comes from research, interviews from relatives, newspaper clippings and more. In fact, this book came from his other book, "The Stormy History of American Weather". He wrote briefly in regards of the this horrid storm, and had made the decision to dig more involving the people that were involved.
The author details the lives of the pioneers from thier travels overseas to the midwest. The deaths and births before hand so that the reader is involved with the characters...cares about the characters before he reports about the day now called "the children's blizzard".
His wonderful detailing about the storm itself is wonderfully written. I could feel the snow crystals as they dug into the characters eyes and skin. I could feel the bitter wind as it bit through the thin clothing of those who were caught outside. I could hear the cries and the angry words of those losing thier ways in the zero visibility.
The author goes into great details the events after the storm. The findings of the bodies, human and animal alike. The media and the cause and effect of the way weather is forecast today.
I highly recommend this book to history buffs out there. I remember hearing about this storm briefly growing up (I lived in Minnesota most of my life), but it was never greatly spoke about till this past year after I moved to the city where I am at now (which is mentioned in the book and our winters are very cold here).
I plan to read this author's other book as mentioned above. He knows how to bring his reader into the lifes of the brave souls who are now the history of our ancestors.
