ademers77049's Full Review: Glenn Beck - The Christmas Sweater
I was pleasantly surprised to receive this book as a Christmas present. I'm sure this book will be a treasured Christmas classic for years to come. It would also make good reading anytime you need a "lift".
The main character is 12-year-old Eddie. He lost his dad to cancer a few years before, and has since lived with his mom, Mary. Mary is a good-hearted woman who tries to do what she can for her son. Eddie has his heart set on a new bike for Christmas, which is well beyond his mom's modest means.
When Christmas Day rolls around, Eddie receives a hand-knitted sweater instead of his sought-after bike. The disappointed boy is unable to hide how he feels, much to his mother's dismay. He even takes his attitude to their dinner at his beloved grandparents' house.
Another family tragedy sends Eddie into anguish that not even his grandfather, who's like a best friend to him, can help him with. In spite of his family's efforts, Eddie keeps pulling away from them. For a long time, Eddie's sole solace is an old man that no one else seems to see who always seems to have something inspiring to say.
What will it take for Eddie to turn around?
I think most of us, regardless of our economic situation growing up, can relate to Eddie at some level. After all, we were all twelve once. Taking people and things for granted is an unfortunate part of childhood.
The story is told with a lot of detail that really puts you right there where Eddie is. His, and the other characters', emotions are expressed very realistically.
The very best part, for me, comes towards the end, when Eddie has his life-changing experience. While I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it, the boy's experience is truly amazing.
I couldn't really find a lot to complain about here.
