The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:great story, wonderful characters

Cons:the different Swedish towns all got mixed up for me, rape scene was graphic

The Bottom Line: This is a great book if you can stand some violence. It's easy to see why it has been a best seller.

I just finished reading my first book on my Kindle: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It was a great experience using my Kindle, but more importantly, it was a really good book.

It starts out with a mystery of flowers being send in the mail, but it quickly switches to apparent other things. There are journalists, a big trial with libel. A man who screwed up, a young women many define as weird, a murder, a powerful family and more. Everything is so well tied together but you don't see how it will end until near the end. And figuring out the murder that happened 40 years ago which is the focus of the story, I didn't see the answer coming at all.

Written by Stieg Larsson I was very impressed with the writing. The character development was great. The way some scenes were so vividly told almost hurt. There are some disturbing scenes with rape, and violence. This book isn't for the faint of heart. But if you can stomach those, you are in for a wonderful ride.

The book takes place in Sweden and was translated from Swedish, so there are a few things I noticed that were just a little different. Jail was called gaol and some of the way things were discussed just seemed like they were from a different culture, but it wasn't very distracting.

The method for investigation described was thorough and meticulous, but it wasn't tedious or boring. I was really interested in the way the lead character, Mikael Blomkvist, went about his task at hand.

Mikael does get the help of the girl with the dragon tattoo, Lisbeth, and the team works very well together, although she is often standoffish. She brings several nice skills into the mix to help solve the mystery.

All in all these are interesting characters with histories and baggage, but with focus and drive and a desire to solve the mystery. I had heard many good things about this book and had high hopes for reading it. I was not disappointed and I am looking forward to the next in the series.

This has been an entry in the It's Elementary My Dead Watson! Write-off and the Lean N Mean X writeoff.
