jiastar's Full Review: Dixie Deerman and Steve Rasmussen - The Goodly Spe...
I had read books on E.S.P. and ghosts since grammar school. I got my first tarot deck as a freshman in high school and I started reading books on spells by my junior year. But, it was not until the age of 18 that I came to Wicca. For the record that was 20 years ago.
Most of the books that come out each year related to Wicca and Witchcraft tend to be tailored to newcomers to the path. It is a rare pleasure when I come across a book that is more geared toward an "elder" in the faith. Coming across The Goodly Spellbook was one of those moments.
What does the book cover
This text is well over 400 pages. Not only does it include 92 spells but it covers topics such as "what constitutes a spell?" finding spell ingredients, and ethics. Additionally, it covers all the techniques that can be made use of in spellcasting such as divination, color magic, numerology, magical scripts, crafting amulets and talismans, and much much more.
Furthermore, the back of the book includes a wonderful bibliography, useful glossaries of both craft terms and herbs, as well as a handy index.
What makes this book special
I'd like to quote directly from the authors:
"This book does more than merely reproduce recipes -- it clearly and vividly teaches you how to create your own spells so that you can tailor your magic to your own individual needs and circumstances.
I have to say that this is the only spellbook I have ever read which bothers to take the time to explore the history of spellcraft. It discusses the use of magic in antiquity, through the medieval period, the Burning Times, the age of reason and modern day. This is one of the few books on spells which bothers to discuss the theory behind how magic works.
Additionally, The Goodly Spellbook takes the time to explore many facets of modern magic and spellcasting thoroughly. Pages are devoted to exploring the elements and four directions, planetary correspondences, the use of sound and rhyme, and so much more.
My favorite sections are a list of "ancient witch words" which can be used to add an old-fashioned touch to a ritual or spell and a selection of magical alphabets.
The Spells
As stated earlier this book includes over 90 individual spells. They are roughly categorized into:
In all my years of reading spell books this is by far the most complete look at the use of magic in ritual and in daily life. Any magical practitioner will find themselves pulling this book off the shelf time and time again just for the sheer wealth of knowledge and information held within its pages
