poetchik's Full Review: Daren Simkin - The Traveler
"The Traveler" is a fable about a boy named Charlie who decides to travel the world is search of perfection. Although he has parents who love him, lots of friends to play with and a fun dog, all of these joys also bring him pain (chores, broken toys, fleas). Charlie yearns for something more, something other than the life he's living.
One day Charlie decides to pack a suitcase and travel the world in search of that something he's missing in his life. Charlie doesn't pack clothing and other belongings but instead, he fills his suitcase with time-decades, mintues, weeks, seconds. He travels the world in search of the perfect thing to spend his time on and although he finds beauty and things he hasn't seen before, in the end he is unable to commit.
Time passes and Charlie still can not find that perfect thing. In the end, Charlie finally realizes that time is best spent with those you love, not saving it how perfection.
This was a very enjoyable book to read and I feel it is a story that reaches all readers regardless of age. "The Traveler" can help children to realize that while life can be annoying sometimes, these experiences in life can help make you a better person. For adults, this book can teach you to cherish time and understand that sometimes a perfect life isn't one you have to search for, it can be the life you're living now.
