artemis8's Full Review: Janet Stein - This Little Bunny Can Bake
I am not sure where I heard about The Little Bunny Can Bake but I am glad I picked it up; it's a cute little book. It is for 4-8 year olds and features many animals who attend Chef George's School of Dessertology.
This world famous school has many students, including Kitty, Poodle, Cat, Dog, Spoonbill, Tiger, Mouse, and Bunny. They all have different ideas of what they could make for dessert.
Chef George, who is an owl, is a bit arrogant, but he does definitely try to teach his students important things for them to know about making desserts. He teaches them the basics, has them work on smelling, and directs them when it is time to finally bake. He reminds them to measure carefully, work with others, and concentrate. Also he wants them to keep neat and have a wonderful smelling and looking dessert.
While most of the class aren't very good listeners, one particular student, Bunny, does listen and her final product is truly amazing.
The book is by Janet Stein and this is her first children's book. There is not much text on each page. Much more of the story is looking at what each of the students is doing in each scene and it really is fun to see the differences among the students. On the page where Chef George says to make it smell good Poodle spritzes perfume, while Cat puts flowers in his blender. Bunny is grating some lemon peel.
The artwork is done in brush and ink. The text is all in red, comments from the students are in black and most all of the illustrations are in black and white, except Bunny. She is pink with a white dress. Her dessert is pink too. I like how it truly makes her stand out on the page. You want to see what she is doing because you are drawn to her, as she is so different from the rest of the crowd.
What the other animals do is fun/funny too. The dog has shoes on his cake and the poodle has bones in hers. The tiger's very meaty dessert is iced with ketchup.
Overall I liked this book. It is cute and shows how one person doing as they are told can have a wonderful outcome. It is very encouraging that way, especially when the other students aren't quite listening. I easily recommend this one.
