talyseon's Full Review: Asami Tojo - Thunderbolt Boys Excite 2
Thunderbolt Boys Excite Volume 2 by Tojo Asami
Warning: This is a Yaoi review. Yaoi is a form of Japanese graphic novels, a manga featuring gay romance. Usually written by women, for women, this stories range from sweet romances to extremely steamy sexual adventures between men. If this is not your cup of tea, well, you have been warned.
The main story in this volume follows the adventures of Natsui Kodaka and Ritsu Yasaka. Kodaka is a small, slender young man. (He is the Uke or passive partner) Yasaka is the heir to a conglomerate, and has his own band. He's big and masculine. (He is the Seme or "top") Kodaka has self esteem issues, but when he joins Yasaka's band, they are both discovered by a modeling agency. Now Kodaka has to learn the modeling business, while being seduced by Yasaka, and it's all very confusing and upsetting for him. Feh. I should have his problems.
Now, they are moving on with their relationship. Kodaka goes with Yasaka to a luxury hotel, then wonders why he is being seduced. When Kodaka is too angsty, Yasaka calls for a call boy, one who looks like Kodaka, and begins making out with him in front of his would be boyfriend. Finally, this is enough to make Kodaka get off the angst fence, and whine he doesn't want Yasaka having sex with someone else. The hooker is summarily dismissed, and they get down to business. It has just slightly more plot than the standard porn where the pizza boy shows up, "Here's the pizza, *Zzzziiiip!* and HERE'S the pepperoni!"
Ms. Tojo has learned to get her angst in during foreplay and afterglow, rather than wasting time with trying to make the gut wrenching insecurity interesting while the boys have their clothes on. And it is a lesson well learned. This volume is far superior to the first. It is much more blatantly about the sex, but let's face it, that is what Ms. Tojo does well.
This story takes up about half the book. The next story is also about Kodaka and Yasaka; they are out with guys from the office, drinking, and playing party games. Kodaka ends up having to kiss Shigure, Yasaka's best friend. Jealousy ensues, claims of not knowing how to kiss, and Yasaka kissing Shigure. Then Kodaka and Yasaka go off into a cloak roam, and end up doing the horizontal mamba. A real throw back to the first volume; Tojo trying to work in plot instead of shooting for steam.
The next three stories involve a boy who indulges in prostitution just once, and ends up landing a salaryman who wants to save him from this demeaning lifestyle, a secret service agent seduced by a much younger man who is his charge (above eighteen, nothing pervy here). This is a reversal story, where the older partner is made the Uke. The last one involves a boy who has a clever idea to visit the object of his desires and fake being sick so he will have to take care of him. However, when he arrives, the hunky Seme is running a dangerous fever, and he ends up taking care of him. Not much sex going on here.
Ms. Tojo still needs to work on a few points; she revels in angst the way frat boys revel in beer, and the way politicians revel in unmarked campaign funds. A little angst can go a long way, and she can drown the audience in it. Of course, her target audience, Japanese women, have proven they LOVE angst, and drama, and tears. But for western tastes, enough!
The art more than makes up for any short comings. Her dynamic composition and explicit anatomy are among the best in the field, and leave nothing to the imagination. This is where her real strength lies, and she might do better to partner with someone to write the drama.
This review, like Yasaka, is Lean-N-Mean, with 666 words exactly.
