Best commentary set on the market.
Written: Jan 20 '03
Pros:Easy readability, various authors, in depth textual study.
Cons:Book of John is not up to par.
The Bottom Line: If you are going to get a complete set, get this one.
I commentary set for Christmas and have not been disappointed with it as a whole. There is not a better mid-length exegetical complete commentary set on the market. While there are more in depth ones, this one keeps it relevant but gives the reader great background on the textual study of the books of the New Testament.
This set is written by various authors, which is a plus because you end up with experts writing about the books they are most knowledgeable about. The parts that I have used I have found helpful and accurate. They do a great job of keeping personal theology out of it and just giving you the information that is in the text concerning context and Greek word studies.
The only shortcoming i have found is in the concise material on the Gospel of John. Besides this I have been very impressed. While if using for extensive study it is useful to supplement with more lengthy books, this set is great for a layman or for anyone looking for a complete set that is up to par.
Another great aspect of this set is its low price (relatively). It is paperback, which saves money but reduces durability.
One final comment, I use the updated set (with the brown covers) but there is an older version (pale yellow color) that is also out there. The new version uses the NIV while the old is based on KJV.got this complete
