Psychics Try to Solve a Murder in White Lies by Jayne Ann Krentz

Written: Mar 15 '07 (Updated Aug 08 '09)
Pros:Entertaining and interesting book
Cons:Mystery could be stronger
The Bottom Line: White Lies was another entertaining book by Jayne Ann Krentz. Her fans should enjoy the book.

I have been reading Jayne Ann Krentz’s books for several years. I tend to pick up her new books when they are released. I just finished reading White Lies, her newest book.

Clare Lancaster was a parasenstive with a strong ability to tell if people were lying. Her ability made relationships difficult for her in the past. Not long after Clare met her half-sister Elizabeth and father Archer Glazebrook for the first time, she discovered the body of Elizabeth’s husband Brad. Several months later, Clare returned at Archer’s request. She met Jake Salter, Archer’s business consultant, who seemed to be up to something else and also had some unique abilities. Clare became connected to another crime and she and Jake started their own investigation into it while also starting a relationship.

Every Jayne Ann Krentz book that I’ve read has been a romantic suspense book. The mystery has been stronger in some books and weaker in others. The mystery and suspense was decent in White Lies, though it could have been stronger. It wasn’t difficult to keep track of what was going on and it wasn’t simple to figure out either. I thought that the mystery was interesting and it made the book entertaining. Things that Clare and Jack did as part of their investigation were shared. There was a small amount of violence in a few scenes that didn’t get graphic. People in the mood for a strong mystery should pick a different book.

Clare and Jake met early in White Lies. There was an attraction between them from the start. It didn’t take them long to act on the attraction which might bother some readers. There were some sex scenes featuring Clare and Jake as well as a few sexual situations. I thought that the scenes were descriptive without being too graphic. Other readers might feel differently. The scenes were a little more descriptive than similar scenes in Krentz’s last few books. The sex scenes in some of Krentz’s earlier books were much more descriptive than what was in this book.

Clare and Jake, as well as several of the minor characters, had psychic abilities. Most of the characters didn’t have very strong abilities while Clare and Jake were more powerful. They used their abilities throughout the book, mostly during their investigation. The things related to the paranormal were interesting and made the book entertaining. Krentz has included paranormal elements in some of her other books. People that don’t like to read about those things should probably stay away from this book.

Jayne Ann Krentz also writes historical romantic suspense books with the name of Amanda Quick and futuristic romantic suspense books as Jayne Castle. I have read all of the Quick books as well as most of the Krentz books and a few of the Castle books. All of the Castle books that I read have included some kind of paranormal elements. The mystery and suspense tends to be a little stronger in the Krentz books. The mystery has been getting stronger in the Quick books. Really the one difference between the groups of books is the time periods and settings they are set in. With White Lies, she has connected a Quick book to a Krentz book. She established the Arcane Society in Second Sight by Quick and it was featured again in this book. I liked the connection and wouldn’t mind if she did it with more of her books.

Clare had a very strong talent that she struggled to learn how to deal with. Her talent could be helpful even though it did cause her some problems. She was a strong, independent woman that could be stubborn at times. Jake also had a very strong, rare talent. He used it to help him with his work. He could also be a bit stubborn. Elizabeth seemed like a nice woman that had worked through some problems in her past. She, as well as her parents, weren’t developed that much. That didn’t bother me too much since they were supporting characters.

White Lies was an entertaining book that had an interesting plot. People that have enjoyed other books that Krentz has written, under any of the names she uses for her books, may also enjoy this one.
