Wouldn'tcha Like to be a Writer, Too?
Written: Jan 25 '00
Pros:humorous look at a writer's life and how to motivate yourself
Cons:only inspirational, not helpful on the mechanics
She makes it so much fun, this writing process. It is a solitary experience while actually doing it, but sharing the fun created with different stretching exercises is a bonding, healing experience with other women. She never mentions writing with men and I assumed she was lesbian and feminist throughout the book. I could relate to how running helps her creative juices to flow, but I also am sure that I can write without running first. I find reading a thought-provoking writer, usually non-fiction, will get my creative juices going.
If you have more trouble getting inspired, though, this is a great book. Even male writers will benefit since my wonderful friend Tim (tfrentz) loaned it to me in a noticeably worn condition. Goldberg has a Zen approach to writing and speaks of her admiration and experiences with Zen masters and a Native American on his way to participate in the Sun Dance, a dance now burgeoning in US after being forbidden for so many years. She encourages the young writer reading her book to not be scared to write what you feel and hear from inside in your spirit.
There are, however, other books for writers which will help them in the fine-tuning or mechanics of writing and publishing. Her purpose is only to motivate you to get started or out of writer's block. It is too easy for a writer to complain of having nothing to write or being stuck, but Goldberg won't let you off that easy. Soon you'll wonder why you waited so long...and want to be a writer. So now you can have fun writing and then worry about the mechanics by looking at other books. If she can help me be a little more passionate or earthy in my writing, there's a good chance she'll help you, too.
