Pros: Leroy builds suspense, follows through with a winning story.
Cons: The mystery won't keep longtime whodunnit readers guessing for long.
The Bottom Line: Leroy has a lovely way with words and characters, and although the plot, suspense, and pace falters a bit (not much!) in the second half, this is fine fiction.
kentmom's Full Review: Margaret Leroy - Yes, My Darling Daughter
The publisher of Margaret Leroy's Yes, My Darling Daughter compares the book to du Maurier's Rebecca; - rather audacious, I thought...until I read it.
The first half nearly crackles with psychological suspense, and Leroy does a very good job creating tension (and relationships) among the various characters.
The second half moves along like a solid suspense/mystery novel, with a (mostly) believable twist. I have to admit I figured out who at least one of the 'bad guys' were, although I didn't precisely nail motive. Still, I'd give the first half of the book an A+ and the second half a B+ or maybe even an A-. Want to know more about the plot?
Are you sure?
If you keep reading, I'll give away the twist...and more.
OK, here's the thing - single mom Grace Reynolds seems to have a lovely relationship with her four-year-old, Slyvie. Crack the exterior, however, and you'll see Slyvie never calls Grace "mom." And Sylvie has a tendancy to throw nasty fits. She's beyond terrified of water, and has odd moments when she seems to recall another home, other friends, and things that never happened.
Or DID they?
Grace, who really is a good mom, can't dismiss Sylvie's stories as everyone else seems to. Which leads us the reader to believe, along with Grace, that maybe Sylvie isn't making this stuff up...maybe it all happened, in another lifetime.
That's it - the plot in a nutshell and the twist. You'll have to read it yourself to get to the resolution. It's worth it!
