| dance4joy's Full Review: Boost Bar |
While I'm traveling around during the next couple of weeks... and in the interest of my continued series of reviews about health food product... I decided to purchase a box of Boost "Nutritional Energy Bars."
Today I am at a friend's house and a few minutes ago she offered me a homemade "Rice Krispies Marshmallow Treat." Trying to stick with my healthful eating plan, I turned it down. Instead... without stopping first to read the ingredients (which is always a big mistake... I opened up my Boost Strawberries & Cream bar. (They also come in Chocolate Crunch, which I do notplan to try!!
First off, this thing tasted pretty much what it obviously is... sugar and vitamins! Phew! :-)
Okay, so it has 17 vitamins and minerals... please pass me a Centrum... thank you! According to the package Boost provides the following percentages of Recommended Daily Allowance:
Vitamin A - 15%
Vitamin C - 15%
Calcium - 15%
Iron - 6%
Vitamin D - 15%
Vitamin E - 15%
Thiamin - 15%
Riboflavin - 15%
Niacin - 15%
Vitamin B6 - 15%
Folic Acid - 15%
Vitamin B12 - 15%
Biotin - 15%
Pantothenic Acid - 15%
Phosphorus - 15%
Magnesium - 15%
Zinc - 15%
Copper - 10%
(Note... the highest amount of any nutrients you are going to find in one of these 1.6-ounce bars is 15% RDA!!!)
Other nutritional information is as follows:
Calories - 190
Fat Calories - 50
Total Fat - 6g
Cholesterol - <5mg
Sodium - 50mg
Potassium - 115 mg
Total Carbohydrate - 30g
Fiber - 1g
Sugars - 18g
Protein - 5g
So why do I say I should have eaten the Rice Krispies Treat?
I was really "sick" when I realized I had eaten this sugary, vitamin-flavored bar instead of the Rice Krispies Treat... and when I looked at the ingredient list that did not brighten my mood any!! Here are the most prominent ingredients:
Crisp rice
Sugar
Corn Syrup
Fractionated Palm kernel oil
Invert Syrup
Milk
Protein Isolate
Soy Pieces
Fructose
Strawberry flavored apple pieces
Nonfat milk
Strawberries
Fruit juice blend (strawberry, plum, grape)
Dextrose
Brown sugar
Yeeks! Need I go on????? --- Even the strawberries are mostly fake!!!
Let me encourage you... if you really want to eat a healthful diet... be careful and read the fine print!!! As I've been reviewing these health food products, I can see why most of them are such big "hits" -- most of them are really pretty much candy bars with a few vitamins thrown in... and in this case, even that amount is very minimimal.
The only thing "Boost" bars are going to boost is the bank account of Mead Johnson! Hey... I think I'll go back and get that Rice Krispies Treat!!!!
