Pros: inexpensive, it really works!, plant extracts, smells nice, non greasy. Animal friendly
Cons: limited availability (only at Target)
There arent many people in the USA who have had as much experience with this brand of products as I have.
Boots the Chemist is a much loved and widely respected British pharmacy (we call it a chemist). Founded in 1849, Boots is involved in the research and manufacture of its own brand of medicines and products Boots even developed ibuprofen known to us as Motrin! Most importantly to a lot of people, Boots does not test any of their products on animals, nor do they have products tested on their behalf by companies who use animals for testing. They test using human volunteers.
Since I was a kid (my kids would say that was back when the earths crust was still cooling) my Mum would take us (me and my brother) to Boots to shop for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, skin care, make-up (that was later, and for me, not my brother), personal care products, baby care, music, eyeglasses, etc, and they also sold sweets (candy to you)!. When I was a teenager, Boots 17 was the skin care and make-up targeted to teenage girls it still is, Boots Number 7 is targeted to any woman out of her teens. I loved Boots 17, and later Boots Number 7 products, but when I moved to the USA, I couldnt get them anymore.
I was so excited when I went shopping in Target recently and found a whole aisle Boots my favourite skin care and make-up and they had added even more! The Boots Botanics skin care range was new to me, and I just had to try it!
What is Botanics?
Botanics, as the name suggests, contains plant extracts in combinations and quantities that are designed to take care of various skin conditions, from dry to oily skin, pre-wrinkled skin to more mature skin, sensitive skin etc. I dont really have any wrinkles yet but do have dry skin that is prone to blemishes and I am sensitive to a lot of skin care products, including Mary Kay, which I LOVED until they changed the formula a few years ago. I bought several Botanics products, but for this review, I shall focus on the Face Lift Firming Cream.
I couldnt wait to tell my Mum what I found at Target, and her immediate reaction was oh, that stuff, Ive been using it for ages, its great! Why she didnt share this little nugget of info with me before and send me some, Ill never know!
Whats in it?
Face Lift firming cream is a rich, non greasy, cream colored, lotion with SPF 10, that is packaged in a 50ml, or 1.69 US fl.oz frosted glass jar with a plain screw top lid. It had a pleasant, clean scent. Its active ingredients are Avobenzone 3%, Octisalate 2.5% Octinoxate 7.5% which are sunscreens, and Plant extracts at levels that really work in this case Echinacea and gingko to help protect and firm the skin. Of course there is a laundry list of ingredients which I have copied from the box and listed below. Notably and important for celiac and people with wheat intolerances, it does contain wheat protein.
What else is in it?
Aqua (Water, Eau), C12-15 alkyl benzoate, Butylene glycol, Glycerin, Glyceryl stearate, Cetyl alcohol, PEG-100 stearate, Dimethicone, Isopropyl myristate, C18- 36 acid glycol ester, Petrolatum, Paraffin, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium citrate, Hydrolyzed wheat protein, Echinacea purpurea (Root, Racine) extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Xanthan gum, Methylparaben, Sodium benzoate, Ginkgo biloba leaf extract, Propylparaben, Parfum (Fragrance), Citric acid, Dipropylene glycol, Limonene, Tetrasodium EDTA, Linalool, BHT, Hydroxyisohexyl 3- cyclohexenecarboxaldehyde, Geraniol, Silica, Coumarin, Citral
What does it claim to do?
Well, it claims to help protect and firm the skin with sunscreen, Echinacea and ginkgo.
What did it do?
I use it every morning and night after cleansing my face. It is not oily, but quite rich and only takes a small amount; one fingertip dipped in the jar should be more than enough. It does not feel heavy; in fact I cant feel it at all once it is on my skin because it is absorbed almost immediately. I used it over the course of a few weeks and began noticing some differences. My skin was smoother, with a more even complexion and those tiny wrinkles that were beginning to develop around my mouth and eyes were almost gone. Ill credit the even completion to the SPF 10 because before using this, I only used sunscreen on my face when absolutely necessary, like at the beach or lake, because sunscreen always feels sticky and heavy. The smoothness could result from most face creams of this type, but the wrinkle reduction? That was new! Ive used anti ageing products before, and none have worked this well.
I have been using it for more than 6 months now, and Im about ? way through my 2nd jar. At $13.99 a jar, it is incredibly inexpensive for a cream that works this well!!
Im a big believer in the power of plants and plant extracts to heal and take care of ourselves, and a lot of people feel, or are beginning to feel the same way judging by the incredible number of natural and plant based products that are coming onto the market every day.
Obviously this cream might not be right for everyone, as I said, it does contain wheat extracts, and people react to different ingredients in different ways. But for me, as sensitive to some products as I am, this is just wonderful and I hope that Boots Botanicals products take off here in the USA, as much as they did in the UK, so that I can continue buying and using them for a long time.
