Borderlands takes place on a distant planet. You control one of four treasure hunters. You are looking for the much sought after Vault. To some, the Vault is a myth; to others it is very real and contains powerful alien technology.

As I mentioned, you control one of four characters:
Mordecai - A long range weapon specialist who is most comfortable with sniper rifles.
Roland - An elite soldier who primarily uses assault rifles and large caliber handguns.
Lilith - A Siren who most effectively uses submachine guns.
Brick - a tank of a man who uses shotguns and melee attacks.
Each of these characters has a unique special ability as well as a unique path to becoming more powerful. When you gain a level, you are able to apply a skill point to a number of different abilities that make you stronger.
As you trek across your arid, desert environment comprised of beautiful cell-shaded mountains and landscapes, you will realize this game is much more than your average FPS or RPG. In my opinion, it is a near-flawless combination of both.
The enemies you face range from humans to enormous crab-like creatures. In the cell shaded world of Borderlands, combat is awesome. Blood, guts, and limbs fly everywhere as you fire high caliber rounds into the charging midget wielding a flaming axe.
As the story develops (I won't give anything away), you will find it increasingly difficult to pull yourself away from your PS3. There are some plot twists and boss fights that will blow your mind. Supporting characters include a robot resembling R2D2, a blind man who wields a shotgun, and an archaeologist that has lost her mind.
And the multi-player....
The game allows for multiple players to play at once via the Playstation Network. The difficulty automatically adjusts to make enemies more difficult if multiple players are in the game. Essentially, everything is the same, but it still remains an open-world game. So while two players go after Sledge, one of the games bigger bosses, the other two could be clearing side quests and earning experience points for everyone.
