The V-slicer is a very good machine

Pros: Much faster and more accurate than a knife for slicing and julienning
Cons: SHARP exposed blade
The Bottom Line: The V-slicer is very useful. It makes quick work of thick and thin slicing, and thick and thin julienning. The safety holder is a plus and is adjustable.

I happened upon a v-slicer in a thrift shop 10 years ago, and picked it up for $2.00. Since then, the V-slicer has been INDISPENSABLE in my kitchen. I use it at least every other day and the blade's just as sharp as ever. I especially like dicing onions on it with the small julienne insert. It makes the job virtually tearless. I can slice cucumbers and radishes, julienne carrots, and dice peppers all on the same machine, making tossed salad a breeze. It also is great for shredding lettuce for tacos (I use the thin slicer). The safety holder holds things very securely and adjusts so that there is no waste. It is also very easy to clean.
My mother tried another similar machine that was lauded as good and cost $20, but the inserts did not stay in securely and the safety holder was not adjustable. She ended up tossing it in the trash because it was not safe.
Even at the normal price of $30-$40, the V-slicer is a great deal, so I'm getting my mother one.
