| angelwings724's Full Review: Borner V-Slicer Plus Mandoline (14") |
My Borner V-Slicer has made my job in the kitchen so much easier. I used to hate cooking anything that required chopping, dicing, slicing, etc. Then I found the V-Slicer.
The Mandoline is about 14" in length and 6" in diameter.
The attachments simply slide into the mandoline for easy use.
There is also a convenient 'hat' which holds the food you want cut so that your hands don't come into contact with the sharp blades.
A holder holds the entire unit plus attachments and stores easily out of sight until you need it again. When you have the Mandolin in the holder, the holder actually has a locking mechanism which keeps everything inside.
It is dishwasher safe, but I normally just wash it by hand. Since the blades are extremely sharp, you have to be very careful.
This is not intended for children's use.
What exactly can you do with the Mandoline?
Anything that needs cutting can be cut with this. Although, I have difficulty slicing really large potatoes or lettuce. The potatoes are so hard that it is hard to get the slicer to go through them safely so I generally do these by hand. Also, lettuce has so many tiny pieces once you get into the head that it is easy to just pull it apart by hand.
I love making salads, especially in the summer when all of the veggies are in season. Chopping tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, peppers, etc, is so much easier and faster. You also get an even slice/cut making the presentation nicer, not to mention all the pieces are bite-size.
The Mandoline works best with raw, hard veggies. Something like a soft wedge of cheese or an over-ripe tomato doesn't do very well. Harder types of cheese or perhaps chocolate works really well.
The Mandoline gets you out of the kitchen alot faster. I have never been very handy with a knife, so it would take me a long time to chop up all the veggies for my salad and none of the pieces would be the same size, making me go back and re-cut some of them so they were small enough.
The Attachments
There are 2 attachments that are reversible. So each side performs a different task. One attachment is simply for slicing; one side slices thick, the other thin. I tend to use the thin side more often. I love thin slices of tomato and onion. The other attachment dices and juliennes; one side is smaller while the other is larger. Again, I tend to use the smaller side more so that the pieces come out bite-size. The 'hat' has little spikes that hold the food in place while you are slicing.
I have had my slicer for many years now and purchased it on QVC, paying $29.95 at that time, plus applicable shipping and tax charges.
My V-Slicer is one of those kitchen items that I could never do without. I use it almost everyday for something.
Why do they call it a V-Slicer?
Simply because the blades are pointed down into a "V" shape, allowing you to begin with the food at the top and slide it down. As the food slices/cuts, it is dropped underneath into whatever bowl/plate you are using to catch it with.
