frisco_dave's Full Review: Bose 3·2·1 GS II Theater System
First off, if you are looking for a solution for a room to either enhance the t.v.'s poor internal speakers (which I was) or you don't want to run rear speaker wires to the back of the room, this system is a great fit.
However, if you are looking for something more matched to true music replication, this would not be a first choice.
Remember that this unit reproduces sounds digitally and only thru 2 channels (plus 1) so the effect is "room filling" but the true sound is not "channel specific." In order to truly hear the individual channels in say a 7.1 channel recording, you must have the seven channels doing single duty.
I like this system because it is easy to set up, comes with built-in DVD player and the speakers are small and unobtrusive. The bass module is small enough to tuck away also. The lines of the unit are clean and "sexy" and there are few wires to get in the way. My BIGGEST beef with this unit is that there are no HDMI inputs/outputs and it doesn't have easy I-pod control/input. It is a little ridiculous that they didn't put HDMI since the price puts it in the level of equipment for people with some extra cash to spend. You can pair that new flat panel t.v. with an HDDVD or Blu-Ray, but you will have to use optical sound back to the Bose in order to utilize it as an audio unit.
For my needs this unit works well, because we didnt' want lots of wire, didn't have rear wiring in place, wireless systems are persnickity at best, the speakers are small, and the room we use it in is difficult to creat good sound. We have a living room of about 20' x 20' which opens up into the breakfast/kitchen area. The ceilings are 30' with windows on two sides and a long hallway on the other. The internal speakers of the 46" LCD we have the Bose paired with can't be heard well, especially on movies.
Best advice I could give is that this should not be mistaken for a solution if you have the ability to install rear speakers. Then I would suggest you get the entire 5.1 type of system. It is however, a great solution if you don't have that ability. It's not a "great DVD player, in that it won't up-convert, etc.
