durhamj's Full Review: Bose Lifestyle 28 Theater System
System is easy to setup and configure. Speakers are small so they won't
become another piece of furniture to arrange.
For an all-in-one unit Bose is a little pricey, but deals can be had on
ebay, watch out for fraud, never send funds via Western Union.
What I liked:
Stylish design, small easy to place. When the wife saw the size she liked
it, when we heard it in the showroom we loved it. We replaced four
components with the LS28 Media Center.
Universal RF remote, very convenient to use, but it takes getting use to.
What I didn't like:
The system doesn't have a "Phono input" for us old school folks with vinyl
collections. Nor does Bose offer a phono pre-amp as an accessory. ( A
Recoton Phone pre-amps can be purchased for about $30.)
Users have to go thru several menus, or button pushing to get to the Bass &
Treble controls.
Users can not customize settings to a selected source. For example, you
can't fix the system to 2Ch Stereo for FM, versus 5ch for CDs, versus lower
bass levels for TV. You can customize the Audio settings to almost any way
you wish, but those settings carry over to all other available sources.
This would be a nice upgrade to the LS28 in a future software update.
The bass or power levels were not as strong as I had hoped. This LS28 is
replacing my old stereo system; an Acoutimass 5 Series II Bose speaker
system, a 250W/ch Carver amp, Audio Contol Equalizer and a Adcom
preamp/tuner. After the initial setup I was little disappointed. My older
speakers had IMHO, tighter & stronger bass; and the Carver probably has more
reserve power. (I rarely played it above 30W/ch).
FM section has a nice little useless feature. When you tune to an FM radio station you can select whether you want the channels delivered in Stereo or Mono mode or the default Auto mode. When you have a station that sounds a little noisey in stereo mode because the signal is weak; when you put the tuner in Mono mode the sound cleans up. Problem: when you set the tuner to Mono then change stations, or turn the system off then on, the turner reverts back to Auto mode. You can't force the tuner to stay in Mono or stereo mode for a given station in your preset list. (( 90% of the time I tune to one station that should be in Mono mode because it is weak/noisey ))
I am still undecided about the Adapt-IQ calibration and the Dynamic Range
Compression features. Both of them appear to limit the Bass output of the
system. I wish I could keep Range Comp. -Off- for CDs and -On- for TV.
