| kidquick's Full Review: Bose Wave Radio II |
Bose has been developing musical excellence since 1964. Some companies branch out into many different R&D projects but Bose has focused on one constant. Great sound equipment for almost 40 years.
Introduction To Sound
The Wave Radio CD is arguable the best sounding counter-top radio in history. Even though it only consists of a pair tiny little 3 inch speakers, the sound chambers they're built in capture and the implode the music, then delivers it like howitzer. The unit has a decent weight ratio because of the large magnets on the back of each speaker. Without those magnets, it would not be able to reproduce the incredible volume sound. Bose speakers are designed to utilize a specialized reverb effect. It causes the sound to bounce off of the surrounding walls. This is called Direct/Reflection which was developed and introduced by them over 25 years ago. Because of this system, sound seemingly comes from all directions, fills the house and tantalizes the human eardrum.
The Wave Radio CD produces sound so rich, deep and elevated that it’s rare I take the time to fire up my Mac Truck system in the living room. The unit also automatically adjusts tonal balance at lower volumes so your company is truly surrounded by background music. At full volume, it will fill the whole house easily and you’ll be able to hear the music around every corner.
OPERATION DESERT “Sound” STORM
It’s very easy to operate with all of the controls being directly on the top of the unit. It has dual alarms that are simple to set and a snooze button that's adjustable up to an hour and a half. There's also a headphone jack in case you like to go to sleep with your headphones on. The CD lid pops up very easily for drop in access. It has CD controls for Stop/Play/Pause etc. You can program up to 32 songs for continuous play via the CD. You can also set it to repeat 1 track, play random tracks, or play the entire CD at random repeatedly. That’s a cool feature for all day music. The model without the CD player will save you $50 smackers.
Unfortunately the AM FM radio only has 6 channels for AM and 6 for FM. They’re easy to set by holding down the corresponding preset number for a few seconds to lock your station into place. But, I usually have at least 12-18 presets in my car and on my RACK system. The radio reception is definitely better than my $1,600 RACK setup. I notice KLOVE 100.1 issues a static response from the stack yet comes in fairly clear with Mr. Bose. Even when located in the same spot.
The remote is exceptional. It’s about the size of a credit card and nicely featured. Of course you can turn the unit on or off, change the volume, start and stop the CD player and switch radio stations. 6 numbers for the radio station presets and up and down arrows for the CD tracks. It works up to about 20 feet for me so I can sit on the patio and handle my business!
EXTRAS
The front display is a vibrant yet cool illuminant green with large readable characters. There’s also a battery back up that will give you hours of protection should the power go out.
With the AUX connection, you can hook it up to your TV or VCR and use it as a center channel or just an added speaker if you don’t have very good sound from your current TV.
You can find Desktop or Shelf Speaker Systems with quite a bit more capabilities and features than this unit but most likely the sound quality with be sub-par. But then again, this unit is small enough to fit on your kitchen counter.
I received this unit as a gift from someone who works for Bose but wouldn’t dare buy one myself. Not at $350-$400. It’s a beautiful piece of machinery but too expensive for most of us. Remember, essentially, it’s just a CD AMFM radio. – WITH RACK SYSTEM SOUND THOUGH.
It comes in 3 cool colors. Black, White and Platnum. With matching remotes no less.
Bose makes integrated sound systems for every venue. Homes, Cars, Boats, Studio’s, Stadiums etc. They are currently recognized as the world leader in audio technology and plan to stay that way for another 40 years. Come to think about, Bose is the system that’s in my $48,000 Q45.
