Boulevard is one of the best restaurants in San Francisco for good reason (It has been rated #1 in Zagat's SF two years running).
The restaurant is located on the Embarcadero, within sight of the Bay and the Bay Bridge, adding to the "San Francisco experience". The architecture, both interior and exterior, are elegant.
Some of the tables are a bit quirky, two people eat side by side, facing the restaurant, but the overall decor makes this work. The kitchen is open and exposed, which is a very nice touch.
The food is excellent. One of the single best dishes I have ever eaten is the Foie Gras at Boulevard. You can't believe how good it is. If you are a Foie Gras lover, or even someone who has been dying to try it, you should try it at Boulevard. Great portion, melt in your mouth flavor. The only downside is that every bite brings it closer to gone.
All of the main courses I have eaten were excellent. In particular, I recall a great steak. But, again, get the Foie Gras.
Portions are fair, which is very unusual for a higher-end restaurant. I usually want to stop by a pizza place on the way home from dinner after eating at a restaurant the calibre of Boulevard.
The wine list offers something for everyone and every budget. The meal overall will end up costing around $100 a person, but that can vary greatly with the wine. They have good wines and they have great wines. You pick it.
I have been to Boulevard several times, and I have been to many of the other top restaurants in the Bay Area - La Folie, Postrio, Aqua, Hawthorne Lane, Chez Panisse, and more. Boulevard tops them all. An experience I would like to repeat regularly.
