| thewisefool's Full Review: Boulevard Bully! Porter |
Boulevard Bully! Porter is my new favorite beer. Based out of Kansas City, Missouri, this dark porter ale is tough to find outside of my state - and even here in Joplin, it can be found at up to $12 for a six-pack. It's definitely worth it, though.
Dark porter ales are quite similar to stouts, and Bully! has some characteristics like the popular Guinness Extra Stout. However, I like it better. The hops content is noticeable, and the chocolate and coffee overtones are delicious. The initial flavor is more powerful, and the aftertaste is both preferable and longer lasting than GES.
Bully! is medium-bodied and has a fairly strong malty aroma, but it isn't an off-putting one. The alcohol content ranges from 4.5% to 5.5% on average, and it's just a few hairs under 200 calories for one 12 oz beer.
The flavor is such that Bully! really goes well with a variety of foods, giving you a high-powered taste feast each time; it somehow stands out on its own while blending nicely with whatever else you consume. You can eat this with anything from meat to chocolate. And in spite of it being roughly 200 calories, it doesn't feel overly filling.
Some reviews I've read have described the beer as too bitter, but generally, this one gets positive reviews. It certainly isn't weak-flavored in any sense, whether one appreciates this kind of taste or not, but I'm definitely its newest fan. If you can find it, give it a try.
