I owned an original Bowflex a couple of years ago, and I had mixed results. However, I bought the bowflex for a slightly different reason: I wanted to gain weight instead of lose it. Therefore, I don't think that the Bowflex was for me. It did a good job of toning my muscles and giving me some definition, but it did not do a good job of building muscle. My theory is that the Bowflex does not let you push yourself the amount needed to gain muscle. You really need a spotter to make yourself work harder, and it would be difficult to have a spotter on the Bowflex.
Here are some features I like:
1) It is quick and easy to change the amount of weight (rods). Therefore, you can keep your heart rate up.
2) You have steady resistance through the entire exercise, unlike with free weights.
3) There are a lot of different exercises that you can do.
4) It will definitely give your muscles a "burn."
5) Folds up into a relatively small package.
Here are some features I don't like:
1) Not good for building muscle.
2) Some of the exercises are awkward.
3) The elastic rods may have to be replaced after a period of time, due to the loss of elasticity.
Overall, the Bowflex is a good piece of exercise equipment. So I would recommend it if you want to lose weight and tone up. But if you want to gain weight/muscle, stick with free weights.
