Pros: Muscles constantly worked through extensions and contractions. Quick change of resistance.
Cons:Hand grips fall too far away from reach.
The Bottom Line: At this point used models are pretty affordable. Check that recall/upgrades are added to prevent injuries. Make sure you can make it a lifetime routine.
I got the Bowflex Power Pro ( 310lbs )from my brother. He had it laying away at his place in a dark corner for a couple of years. He was going to sell it or get rid of it so I told him to give it to me to give it a try.He got most of the upgrades needed to maked it a safe machine. The reinforced bars for the bench, the steel enforced rolling seat to replace the fragile plastic one, and the seat lock. I went to their recall website to find out that they were replacing the riser bracket for a foldable one, the handles, pulleys and hand grips for free. I call them up gave them my brothers customer number and now have a safely reinforced power pro. I am so impressed with the work out I get with this machine! I have gone to gyms and left them due to I can't stand the crowd and noise. I work all day with patients in noisy enviroments so that's the last thing I want on my free time. I was using a Weider Home gym instead but was noticing a lack of constant resistant when working out. I decided I would try the Bowflex and decide to sell it or replace my old Weider gym instead. Well I sold the Weider instead. Now let me tell you if you're one of those that are inspired for a while and than end up using their treadmills for a clothes hanger don't bother. This is reccomended for a person that can maintain a workout routine as a lifestyle...not a phase. I can feel the differance in my workout. Why? First I can pretty much use the bowfles for any part of my body. Granted the seated leg press are easy but I start off with both legs and than press one leg at a time. Changing weights take a second. Just clip another rod to the cable hooks and go at it! You can't slam the weights down and if done properly you can feel the constant resistance throughout the whole movement. I would advise to keep a log of your progress as you workout to see your improvements. Also it wouldn't hurt to add some free weights and cardio to the regimen. They can all be done effectively in tandem. Warm to some cardio not the lame rowing they suggest. I feel a soreness the next day that says I really worked out my muscles. I wish I had taken pictures of before and after as I have noticed a difference in my appearance. Granted I also combined a realistic diet with my workout. No way am I following the one shown in the Bowflex guide. I mean come on; some of these strict diets are too drastic and will just leave you frustrated. Now another thing I will add is that the workout is more to sculpture your body not bulk it up. Imagine a men health body not a muscle fitness body and you won't be dissappointed. A great thing about the design is that it folds up and can be wheeled away so as to not be obtrusive. My only gripe is the hand grips fall far out of your reach when you let them go. I have placed tie-grips (get them at the auto parts) on both side smaller U-bar where the seat rail rest that way I can let them drop down and the long strip of the tiedowns keep it from falling away from my reach. Anyway, the Bowflex is a very impressive gym and the newer ones look like they improved all the glitches. The question is whether you're able to make it a lifetime habit or a waste of money.
