Sex Pays. Love Costs. BOY CULTURE
Written: Mar 08 '10 (Updated Dec 14 '10)
Pros:Great story with a tight script, and great actors to bring it to life.
Cons:Homosexual content may offend some....but who cares?
The Bottom Line: The heart of a prostitute can be pure, vulnerable, and untouched. This is a story of faith in the heart.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Boy Culture (2006) Written and Directed by Q. Allan Brocka
The Quotes. Interspersed through the film.... •1.) Forgive me Father, I felt lustful. •2.) Forgive me Father, I was insanely jealous. •3.) Forgive me Father; I was too lazy to do more than pretend everything would be alright. •4.) Forgive me, Father, for I was wrathful. •5.) Forgive me Father, I was too proud to admit he was right. •6.) Forgive me Father, I consumed more than I required.
This is the story of X, a hustler who avoids emotional commitment like the plague. He has twelve regulars, all wealthy, who keep him in the lifestyle to which he has become accustomed. This movie is narrated as his confession.
X (Derek Magyar) shares his apartment with two other men. Joey (Jonathon Trent) is a slutty little twink who is desperately in love with X, but hardly going to pine away for him. Andrew (Darryl Stephens) is the other; calmer, more mature, easy, casual, and affectionate, he is X's opposite, and that probably accounts for why X is so attracted to him. (He is also about the cutest black man on the planet. I think that accounts for some of it too.)
One of X's stable of clients dies, and leaves an opening. The new fellow that tries out for the position is nick named "the Geezer." Gregory (Patrick Bauchau) is a recluse, who has not left his sumptuous apartment for eight years. And he refuses to have sex with X until X desires him as much as he desires X. Instead, they talk. X is still paid, but they discuss Gregory's grand love of fifty years, Rinaldo. They discuss Andrew and Joey, and the only time X ever had sex for love, not money, with his cousin Andy.
Joey continues his attempted seduction, but it is when Andrew tries to get close to X that the trouble really starts. Andrew is going to his ex girlfriend's wedding, and he wants X to go. This will be coming out to his family. The only white guy at the affair, and the prodigal son's boyfriend. That is one brave hustler.
Of course, it is all about finding love. There are three candidates, according to the law of conservation of characters. Which one will it be?
One of the reasons that this movie works, and works so well is that the characters act like real people. They react, frequently poorly, to the currents of romance, but they are all intelligent enough to realize they are being stupid, but human enough to do it anyway.
The actors are great as well, Derek Magyar, fondly recalled as the chief engineer of Enterprise while Trip was away, has a boyish sensuality, combined with a stern masculine self control. Darryl Stevens is sensitive and sensual, and Jonathon Trent is a bubbly font of gay good will and rampant hormones. Patrick Bauchau is wise, or at least skilled in playing the games of the human heart. Together, they make us care about this little community, and what will happen to them.
Technically, the movie is well made as well, with a spare cinematography and a mood enhancing score. It trips along, not lingering, but not rushing either. If a situation can be explained with an expression, then it is, and not long winded exposition.
What you end up with is a tight little tale about the vagaries of the human heart. Straight of gay, you will recognize the defense mechanisms we all use. And you will hope for a happy ending.
•7.) Forgive me Father; I'm guilty of the deadliest sin. I'm human. How many Hail Marys is that?
