Pros:Promotes good oral hygiene, comes with Oral-B toothpaste, nice color.
Cons:This has to be the loudest battery operated toothbrush I have ever seen.
The Bottom Line: Spoil your princess with Oral-B's Disney Battery Powered Toothbrush!

When it comes to teeth, I am a stickler about brushing at least three times a day. The boys are set into their routine of brushing when they get up, after meals and before bed but a certain little girl doesnt seem to think that brushing her teeth is nearly as important as a million other things. That all changed when she had her very first visit to the dental office; I figured that maybe if she had a little fear put into her that might motivate her to brush more often. When she saw some of the pictures of cavities and rotted teeth she wasted no time in asking for a new toothbrush but she wanted an electric one. Maybe I'm weird but I don't care for electric toothbrushes, the battery powered ones are less expensive and easier to replace and when they get too covered in toothpaste [or fall in the toilet], it costs a fraction to replace. We had to stop at the drugstore to pick up some necessities and I saw a couple of the Oral-B Disney Toothbrushes in the sale section. Not only did it look great but it has a smaller head than other toothbrushes that are designed for kids.
The color is extremely girly so I doubt any boy would want to use this but in this house that is a good thing. Any time anything pink or purple surfaces in the bathroom they inch away from it like it is a foreign object from another planet. The only place that you see the actual Disney Princess design is around the neck of the toothbrush, granted the images are small and after a week there is usually a lot of toothpaste build up but when it's fresh out of the package it does look pretty cute. The body is a mix of two shades of pink and a light blue. Before I go any further I do have to stress that this is not the one that has the one minute timer on it. Those cost a little bit more but if you are determined to have your child get into a good routine then spending a couple dollars more is worth it. I'm not all that crazy about the button that turns it off and on; it's sealed inside a thick membrane and isn't the easiest of things to press. Another strange thing is there are three 'dots' on the front of the toothbrush, these look like they do something but they don't. I have to assume that they are there for looks and to help when gripping the toothbrush.
I was convinced that this was a one time use type of toothbrush and that the heads were not replaceable but Annabelle pulled the toothbrush sleeve up and said, "See, it comes off". How can a child remove one of these and an adult can't? I checked the prices on them and they are about $3.00 for a package of two; I'm not sure if you can use any type of design in case your child is bored with the Princess theme but from the way that they look in the packages, they all seem to be the same size. Considering the price that I paid for this, I would have been better off picking up a few more of these instead of buying the replacement heads. I'd have brand new batteries and the base wouldn't be covered with toothpaste. There is a blue line through the bristles, when this starts to fade it is time to think about getting some replacement heads, when you do so, make sure you are buying them for the children's toothbrush, not the adult size.
This comes with the two AA sized batteries that are needed to power it. So far they haven't needed replacing but when the time comes I know that it's an easy thing to do. There is no safety screw to keep the battery door sealed so if you have curious kids you may want to tell them that this isn't something that they should be taking apart. The batteries arent some cheap brand either, they are Duracell Ultra M3 with the cool little power bar on the side. Of course that doesnt really do anything to help you gauge how much power is left because you can't see them when they are inside the toothbrush. She's had this for about two months now and uses it several times a day and I'm surprised that the head hasn't needed replacing yet, they are usually the first thing to go. Installing the batteries isn't hard but the markings on the inside of the rim can be a little hard to read. I had to put these in a couple times and alternative the negative and positive positions to get it to work.
I have no idea what the suggested retail price is on this, I paid $2.75 for it and I consider it a great deal because it comes with a full sized tube of toothpaste. OK, so curiosity got the best of me and I had to look online to see what these were selling for; there are some at eBay but do you really want to buy a toothbrush from an auction site? Amazon.com has it listed but it is showing a photo of a regular toothbrush and they do not have it in stock at this time. Drugstore.com has this on sale for $4.99 however this is a different Princess version so dont get sucked into thinking that you are going to have a cool pink and purple one like Annabelle [the one they are listing takes on AA battery, this one takes two]. For $2.75 I got a great deal on this; so far I haven't seen any indication that these are being discontinued and when I asked at the store why they were on clearance they said that they didnt have enough space for them.
Princess Pink Bubble Gum Toothpaste
Included with the toothbrush is a full sized tube [4.2 ounces] of toothpaste. It is in the Oral-B Stages series and it really compliments the toothbrush. It's designed to be set upside down so that gravity pulls the remaining toothpaste downward so you don't have to stand there and squeeze it. She went through the first tube already and when I asked her if she wanted the same one again she shook her head no and said that it was too "sweet". Sweet meaning the taste, not that it has Disney Princess stuff all over it. The kicker here is that the toothpaste nib has a design; it's a moon shape that the tube touts as follows; "squeeze fun shapes" Either I am a complete moron or I can't squeeze a toothpaste tube but I've never seen a moon shape section of toothpaste come out of this tube.
The Bottom Line
I am really pleased with how this has worked to motivate her to brush her teeth without being prompted to do so. At one point in time she was going through a toothbrush a month then decided that since they were baby teeth there was no real need to brush them if they were just going to fall out anyway. This is extremely loud so if this is the first battery powered toothbrush that your child will be using, make sure you turn it on for them before they start to brush so they know exactly how loud it will be. Her teeth are nice and white and even though she is losing more of her baby teeth, she is on the road to having great permanent teeth in the future. The toothpaste that comes with it is 100% girlie and smells like someone is chomping on five pieces of bubble gum but it is sugar free and if it gets her to brush more often then so be it.
As always, thanks for the visit
