| cymsteve's Full Review: Breathe Right Nasal Strips |
I first tried Breathe Right strips a few years ago after receiving several of them as a freebie at a local 10k race. I read the leaflet that accompanied them and figured it wouldn't hurt to give them a go. Here's what I found:
WHAT ARE THEY?
A Breathe Right strip looks like a narrow band aid, but it has two flat bands of plastic embedded into it. When placed correctly across your nose, the plastic tries to straighten itself, therefore lifting the sides of the nose and opening up the nasal passages.
HOW DO THEY WORK?
All the air you breathe has to pass through the 2 small spaces at the back of your nostril (nasal passages). If these are congested because of cold or allergies it makes breathing very difficult and quite uncomfortable. A Breathe Right strip quickly and painlessly opens these passages to aid breathing - no hassles and no drugs, although they do look a bit odd!
WHO SHOULD USE ONE?
Anyone who suffers from allergies, has a cold or congestion, snores when they sleep and during exercise.
SIZES:
Small / medium for younger people or adults with a small to medium nose.
Medium / large for adults with larger noses.
Correct sizing is important as the strip shouldn't cover the cheek, just the nose.
DESIGNS:
Original tan.
Clear - a new, almost transparent design.
PRICES:
A pack of 12 will cost about $5 in most stores.
CONCLUSION:
I have read and rated mixed reviews of the Breathe Right strips. Some people like them and some think they're a con. Personally, I have only used them whilst running over longer distances (10 miles or more) and have found them to be great - they make my breathing easier and it feels like you're taking in more air. Whether this has any real benefit I'm not sure, but if it works mentally then it's a help. **(see below)
I also know of others who swear by them when they're suffering with allergies and have read about people who can now sleep soundly at night because of Breathe Right strips. My advice would be try them out and see of they work for you.
FINAL NOTE:
I have recently seen a new type of strip on the market with mentholated vapors which are designed especially for cold sufferers. These are available in child and adult sizes and look a great idea - sounds good in theory anyway.
** On the official website there are details of several tests which were carried out to prove the strips benefit breathing during exercise. Feel free to check out the findings here:
