| hockeyguy99's Full Review: Brians Goalie Equipment Air Thief Goalie Catch Glo... |
Now, anyone who has read any other of my reviews, they have been on player hockey equiptment, the truth is I am a goalie officially. I use to play Junior A hockey and now due to injuries I am out of competitive hockey and so I am playing mens league hockey of which i also play player in(but I do play against former AA players and I do quite well so it isn't like I don't know how to play player, I am just better at goalie). That is how I get my player knowledge, but my expertise is in Goalie Gear and teaching goaltending. So, now that is out of the way, I absolutly LOVE the Brians Air Theif Trapper. Although I got it custom made(along with all my other equiptment, all made by Brian's) it has more or less the same stuff as the Air Theifs you buy in stores, just a little more padding and different colours.
The first thing I noticed about the glove when I put it on was the sheer size of it. Of course, being a former competitive goalie, I want every advantage possible so I got the large size. I thought that it being so big that it would be too hard to use. I was COMPLETELY wrong! The glove is REALLY light, and once you break it in, it is really easy to catch with.
As for padding, like I said, I added some into mine, but it was only in the palm for when I took those hard slappers that it wouldn't hurt. I have taken a shot off of most every part of this glove and not once has it hurt. Brians did an amazing job in designing this glove. It has all the right padding in all the right places.
A feature I really like about this glove is the inside straps. There are only 2 straps on the inside(which you must undo 3 and pull on a flap to get to) which are located right around your wrist. The reason I like this so much is for 2 reason. The first being I can get the glove REALLY tight around my wrist but nice and loose around my hand, I like that in a glove. The second reason is because there are only 5 total straps on this glove. In a game situation if I have to adjust my equiptment, taking off and putting my glove back on doesn't take a lot of time. I saw some gloves with way too many straps on it.
Another reason why I like this glove is it suits my style of play. I am a hard core butterfly goalie and having a really fast, big glove is essential for those quick shots upstairs. This glove is both light which makes it really easy to snap my glove up really fast and big so if I can't catch it, it will bounce off some part of my glove and to the ground so I can cover it up.
The only real thing I didn't like about this glove is that I didn't ask for it to be pre-broken in. And that was a mistake, because it took about a month to get the glove loose and get it nice and broken in, and I play every day.
People who normally read my reviews(all 3 of them!) see my alternatives to this product and advice to parents(sometimes). Well, I will give advice to parents, but I won't give alternatives to this glove, for 2 reasons. The first being I LOVE Brian's. I am a hard core Brian's fan, I will just end up recommending Brains equiptment. Secondly, I have never really used equiptment other than Brian's, and anything to do with goalie gear is 90% how you feel about it and how it suits your game. It's really a decision YOU must make, not on advice by me. As for parents, I can't really say much other than, try not to blow 5000 bucks on your son/daughter to buy them new equiptment when they are young. They are going to grow out of it in a year and you just wasted $5000. In my hometown(Ottawa, Ont.), we can rent equiptment which is pretty good quality or buy it used at a good price. When your child has stopped growing, it is worth it to get them custom equiptment if your going to buy them expensive equiptment like Brian's stuff. If your going to spend $430.00 on a store bought glove or spend $500.00 like I did to get it custom made, it is more than worth it, it really is, especially if your child plays competitive hockey.
