| my_mother's Full Review: Brita Space Saver Water Pitcher |
As with most of Florida, the water here isn't all that tasty. To soften the water, I'm told, they add a lot of lime and other chemicals. For the first several years down here I bought bottled water instead of drinking the tap water. We sometimes would leave the water in the refrigerator over night and it tasted pretty good but after finding the Brita there was no need for waiting the taste went right away.
Somewhere around 4 years ago, my daughter-in-law purchased a Brita water filter to use at their home for better tasting water. When we went to visit her, she demonstrated how the filter would remove all the taste as well as any other impurities from her water supply. I tasted both before and after and was amazed at the difference. After this little taste test I was convinced that upon our return I’d give one a try at home.
As I said earlier our water has a some bad taste so I purchased a Brita Space Saver Water Pitcher for the fridge. (It also came with a smaller personal filter pitcher for use while traveling). I filled it up with water after soaking the filter the recommended amount of time and running a throw away initial fill-up. I placed the pitcher in the refrigerator and waited for it to get cold. When I took my first taste I really noticed the difference. I then went back to the faucet and tried my tap water again. I noticed that it tasted very funny. I couldn't believe I ever drank the water before. It’s now been over 3 years and each time I drink directly from the faucet I notice that taste again and again even worse that originally. I now choose to drink only from the pitcher. The pitcher holds enough water for 4 large glasses but if you want seconds you’ll have to wait for it to filter first. I learned to keep an extra bottle of tap water in the refrigerator and at least when it’s filtered it’ll be cold.
The replacement filters aren’t cheap and if you change them as often as recommended you could use several each year. They now have a little thing you place on top of the filter cartridge and it turns each time you fill up the reservoir, but you must fill it all the way each time. No partial fills or this mechanism won’t work. We change the filter about every two or three months as needed which seems to be fine. After filling the necessary number of times it moves to the replace filter notch and you should replace it. It's sort of like a timer but water makes it go.
I don’t think I’ll ever give up my Brita Water Pitcher unless it’s for another model. There are several different models to choose from so you can pick the one that best fits your needs. All are make of sturdy plastic and seem almost unbreakable. The pitcher holds about a quart and a half of water when full to the top so there's always of cool clear drinking water.
