Brooklyn Brown Ale is a product of the Brooklyn Brewing Company, a large craft- brewer that opened its doors in 1987. This brewery now produces approx. 12 distinctive malt beverage products.
Basic Characteristics:
Upon pouring this beer into a glass, the thing that first caught my attention was the solid, sturdy head of foam. This is one thing I always look for when I taste- test a beer for the first time. Lack of foaminess doesn't necessarily mean the beer will be bad, but a solid head of foam is usually a sign of great things to come.
The color of this beer is copper/brown with a sweet, caramel aroma. It has good clarity, too. The taste of the beer wasn't as good as I expected at first, but it got better as I drank a little more. The reason? I committed the cardinal sin of drinking the beer ice- cold. Once it was allowed to warm a little, the complex flavors became more pronounced and more enjoyable.
This beer has a toasted malt taste, with some chocolate and caramel flavors as well, and it's easily drinkable. The ingredients used in this product include pale, chocolate, crystal, and black malt; along with cascade hops and yeast. The taste is very well- balanced; sweet at first, then a little bitter at the finish, when the cascade hop flavor hits the palate. This is one of the distinctions of an American Brown Ale. The flavor is a little more bitter than the brown ale served in England. The aftertaste of this beer is pleasantly malty, with a hint of vanilla. The alcohol level of this beer is 5.2 percent by volume.
Awards/Recognition:
Brooklyn Brown Ale has received a few awards, including Bronze medals in the Great American Beer Festival in both 1991 and 1992.
Food Compatibility:
This brown ale would make a good complement for steak, ribs, and other red meat dishes. And because of its chocolate taste, it would also make a good beer to serve with chocolate desserts.
Closing Thoughts:
Brooklyn Brown Ale is a very good beer. I have seen this beer in the stores for years, but I never bothered to pick up a six pack until now. Maybe it's because the label isn't very catchy to the eye. Maybe it's because my mind is usually set on another beer. Whatever the reason, I'm very happy that I finally decided to try Brooklyn Brown Ale. It's a delicious American Brown Ale. Two thumbs up from me!
