| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Brooklyn Pennant Ale 2424b |
Brooklyn Pennant Pale Ale '55 was brewed as a tribute to the Brooklyn Dodgers and their victory in the baseball World Series in 1955. This New York brewery produces many fine malt beverage products, all with quality and distinction. This pale ale is the only one of its style that this brewery produces.
Basic Characteristics of this Beer:
Like most pale ale styles, this beer opens up with an aroma of hops and just a touch of citrus. The color of this beer is copper/orange. There is a pretty good amount of foaminess, if you pour it aggressively, but it doesn't last very long.
Brooklyn Brewery uses Fuggles, Willamette, and Cascade hops in this beer. They also use a special style of malt called Maris Otter Malt. Supposedly, this malt adds a biscuit- like flavor to the beer. I could faintly taste the dinner roll characteristic that they are talking about. Although I have tasted other beers that have a much stronger biscuit flavor than this one, the decision to add this special type of malt to this beer does add an interesting dimension to the malt flavor, giving it the taste that's similar to that of baked bread rolls.
The overall taste of Brooklyn Pennant Pale Ale '55 is well- balanced between hops and malt. Many pale ales are very heavy on the hops, but this one is balanced, with a slight taste of fruitiness, and a slightly crisp, balanced finish. The aftertaste is pleasant, with the taste of a mixture of hops and malt. The alcohol level of this beer is 4.8% by volume.
Food Compatibility:
I would match this beer up with meats like steak, ribs, pork chops, or chicken. It's flavor profile is well- balanced, so it could accommodate many other foods, too. But I think meat is the best food to match it with.
Final Thoughts:
This is a pretty good pale ale. I like ale more than lager and I like the taste of hops over malt, so I'm already partial to a beer when I know that it has these two qualities. Brooklyn Pennant Pale Ale '55 is a mild version of the style. I think this would be a good pale ale to serve to someone who is unfamiliar to this style of beer, or to someone who doesn't normally like pale ale.
As far as beer goes, this one is pretty good. It may not win any awards, but I give it a recommendation for its smooth drinkability and its very accommodating characteristics. It's the type of pale ale that many people can drink and enjoy. Cheers!
