Pros: features, price
Cons: bird nests, broken bobbin winder, automatic needle threader.
My daughter is in her second semester of home economics. She is enjoying learning how to sew. We had an old Singer sewing machine, but it was more trouble than is was worth. I wanted to encourage my daughters new found skills and decided to buy a Brother CS 8072. Consumer Reports gave Brother high ratings and the machine had a lot of features for the price. I understand Bother makes two of these, one to be sold through dealers (PC2800) and this one (CS8072) to be sold through Walmart. I called Brother and they told me the machine is identical on the inside, only the color and the name are different.
My daughter and I are making three ply fleece scarves, (20 of them) for teammates. Very straight forward. We use a stretch stitch straight down the middle. In two out of three scarves, (we gave up after the third) we got intermittent rows of bird nest on the underside and after two uses the bobbin winder failed. We could not make the automatic needle threader work and I was unable to find an explanation on how to use it in the instruction manual. My 14 year old daughter who was so excited about expanding her sewing skills became so frustrated she wanted to throw the machine out the window.
I am perplexed by the two other reviews that say this machine is so great. I admit we are novices, but this machine was a huge disappointment. Perhaps I got a lemon and should exchange it and try another one.
I would appreciate any comments other reviewers have that might help us.
