grumpycat's Full Review: Brother HL-5250DN Laser Printer
Purchased new January 2006. I typically print full pages in duplex mode, apparently more than the "5% coverage" rating as the printer was complaining about the 3500-page rated toner being low at 1700 pages. Kept using it anyway without seeing any degradation in output. Installed TN-580 at 2000 pages, now at 3400 pages on the printer.
Ethernet, Postscript emulation, and duplex, was the combination which loosened my wallet. Have intended to configure and use from FreeBSD but never needed to bad enough to spend 5 minutes doing it. Is used heavily from MacOS X where contrary to other's report it most certainly has duplex control in the standard print dialog box. In the Layout tab one selects between single-sided, long-edge or short-edge binding. Because I flip between duplex and not-duplex quite a lot I started with the predefined "Standard" print settings, added duplex, then used Save to create a "Brother 2-side" setting.
Later noticed some vendors were selling this printer with an optional paper tray at the same price as I paid without. Haven't seen those deals lately but it would be nice to load an entire ream of paper at a time. Standard tray holds little over half a ream (300 pages).
Have downloaded and updated printer firmware from Macintosh. Many products who claim to support Mac do not go this far, thank-you Brother.
