filth_magnet's Full Review: Brother P-Touch 2100VP Thermal Label Printer
I have always supported Gemini products. As a beginning DJ, I could not afford high end turntables and mixers that Technics and Pioneer spit out. So when I started out, I started with the Gemini Scratch Pack. After using those nasty belt drives, I upgraded to the PT-2100s. I stuck with Gemini products because they are high quality turntables and mixers for a decent price.
I got my PT-2100s for $399.00 each on Muscians Friend. They are much cheaper these days, as I did buy them when they first came out.
The PT-2100s come with lots of "goodies":
1) High Torque Motor - The PT-2100s are direct drive turntables with a starting torque of 2.2 kg/cm. The records start fast enough and keep their speed at a fairly consistent rate when you are mixing records. There is an electronic breaking system that stops the records dead quick. The motor is a brushless DC Motor coming at ya at 18Vs. Wow and flutter is at 0.01% WRMS.
2) Reverse mode - There is a reverse button that plays the records in reverse to let the DJ add more creativity to his/her mixes.
3) Pitch Control - The PT-2100 comes with -10/+10 pitch control. A good enough range to mix different types of genres with different BPMs a minute, such as hip-hop to house or house to trance/drum & bass. Decent, yet other models such as Stanton, American DJ and Technics go up to +12. Pitch control is for both 33 1/3 rpms and 45 rpms.
4) Quartz Control - With the pitch control comes a quartz control button that lets you play records at 33 1/3 rpms or 45 rpms at the most precise speed.
5) Tone Arm - The tone arm is a S-shaped arm and not a straight arm. In my opinion, the PT-2100 is not the best turntable for scratching. The arm does not help the stylus hold well to the vinyl, thus making the needle go all over the place. There is anti-skidding control, but it did not help me. Maybe I am not gentle enough?
The PT-2100s are great turntables. They have not given me any trouble since I got them 2 years ago. I DJ mostly trance and house, which means that I mostly mix. I do not really scratch a lot. I do not recommend these turntables for those who want to scratch or learn to scratch. For those individuals, I would recommend a higher torque model with a straight tone arm.
The PT-2100s come with a headshell to protect the turntables, and a 45 adaptor for those old 45 rpms records. The turntables do not come with cartridges so be prepared to buy those first otherwise you will have turntables with no needles!
The only complaint I have is that the pitch control is so sensitive. Just one little tiny push of the pitch control can ruin the whole beat matching and ruin the mix. This is said with having experience mixing with Technics 1200s - but what could beat those?
Gemini PT-2100s are great for beginners who want to find an inexpensive direct drive turntable. I am glad I chose Gemini for my DJ gear and hope to stick with the Gemini brand for days to come.
